City of Savannah is seeking a Maintenance Crew Chief to oversee park facility upkeep, playgrounds, and athletic fields. You will plan and assign daily work orders, supervise crew members, and coordinate with inspectors and contractors to ensure safe, efficient operations.

The role requires leadership experience in maintenance, a valid driver's license, and ability to operate diverse equipment. Schedule is M–F, with potential seasonal adjustments and background checks.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED with 2 years of experience in landscape maintenance, building maintenance, construction, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory or semi-supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work; implements schedules; monitors progress; inspects work and provides guidance.
  • Provides technical guidance as leader of designated crew.
  • Enforces safety rules; ensures proper PPE and compliance with regulations.

About the Role

This position is responsible for managing the maintenance of the park facilities including multiple construction and repair activities involving the surrounding structures of parks, playgrounds, and athletics fields.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work; implements work schedules assigned by supervisor; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Provides technical guidance as leader of designated crewemployees.
  • Communicates safety rules and procedures to assigned crew members; monitors work to ensure compliance with applicable regulations; ensures that crew members are properly outfitted with safety glasses, gloves, masks, and steel-toed shoes.
  • Performs skilled and lead work on medium and heavy equipment; safely operates any type of motorized equipment that excavates, loads, or moves dirt, gravel, or other material to maintain.
  • Inspects, cleans, and performs routine equipment preventive maintenance on power tools, equipment and vehicles; ensures suitable operating condition.
  • Assists in planning, coordinating, and scheduling park related construction, maintenance and repair; schedules, prioritizes, and assigns daily work orders to crews.
  • Inspects job sites for compliance with health, safety, rules and regulations; ensures safe, efficient work methods and practices; makes changes to work orders to resolve problems; recommends alternative solutions.
  • Directs crews to make emergency repairs; coordinates work with other utilities, contractors, City and State inspectors, customers, and any entity that is essential to completion of each assignment.
  • Visually examines site and structures to determine extent of required remedial action; reports circumstances to superiors and notifies available qualified personnel and organizations.
  • Assists supervisor in training and orientation of less knowledgeable employees by explaining and demonstrating work performed.
  • Instructs operators in safety precautions and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED; with two (2) years of experience in landscape maintenance, building maintenance, construction, or a related field. At least one (1) year of supervisory or semi-supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Work Schedule: M - F 7:00am – 3:30pm with seasonal adjustments. Additional Requirements Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

  • Must be able to perform mathematical calculations with respect to dosages and chemical mixing and use.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently operate tools used to perform duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to take and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply manuals and instructions.
  • Ability to write and keep reports.
