Job Description: Maintenance/Construction Worker I-III

Performs intermediate skilled and semiskilled work in a variety of public works construction, maintenance, and repair projects. Occasionally operates specialized equipment related to tasks. Works under the supervision of a Crew Leader.

Hiring Ranges for Maintenance/Construction Worker I-III:
  • Level I: $35,836 - $43,720
  • Level II: $39,510 - $48,201
  • Level III: $43,559 - $53,141
Physical Conditions

This is heavy work requiring exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Tasks include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Communication involves speaking and hearing for exchanging ideas and perceiving detailed information. Visual acuity is necessary for inspecting small defects, using measuring devices, operating machinery, and ensuring work accuracy. Work environment includes both inside and outside conditions, with exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and respirator use.

Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled and semiskilled tasks in constructing, maintaining, and repairing public facilities such as streets, drainways, sidewalks, and related infrastructure.
  • Gather tools, materials, and supplies for assignments.
  • Patch, repair, and maintain streets; repair curbs and gutters; assist with landscaping.
  • Rebuild road shoulders; dig ditches; rebuild driving aprons.
  • Install, repair, and maintain storm drain facilities; build and set forms for sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
  • Shovel asphalt and direct traffic during street maintenance; erect traffic control signs.
  • Read blueprints and assist in project layout and planning.
  • Assist equipment operators with grading using transit or level.
  • Purchase materials and tools as approved by supervisor.
  • Transport equipment to job sites and review instructions with supervisor.
  • Operate dump trucks, rollers, box blades, tractors, sweepers, backhoes, and hand tools; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Pour and finish concrete; assist with snow and ice removal; clean catch basins; pick up litter.
  • Clear and trim trees; mow grass.
  • Fit and secure pipe connections; help keep pipes on grade.
  • Participate in project cleanup activities.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in construction and maintenance work or equivalent education and experience.
  • Level II and III require three (3) years of experience in maintenance, construction, and heavy equipment operation, or equivalent.
  • Placement into Level I, II, or III depends on qualifications and experience.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a NC CDL Class B License within six (6) months.
  • Must be on call when required.
Skills and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of safe equipment use, operation, and maintenance; skill in equipment operation; ability to follow oral instructions; perform manual labor in adverse weather; lift heavy objects; good physical condition; and establish effective working relationships.
