Job summary

The City of Lancaster (CA) is seeking a temporary Street Sweeping Assistant to support public works operations. Under general supervision, you will hand sweep, operate light and C-class sweeping equipment, and assist with field repairs and maintenance.

This non-exempt role focuses on safety, customer service, and efficient right-of-way cleanups in residential and commercial areas. Desired candidates can follow schedules, maintain records, and communicate effectively with staff and the public.

Qualifications

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience providing the knowledge, skills and abilities for acceptable job performance.
  • Currently enrolled in college, university, or trade school; desirable.
  • Certifications in Traffic Control Management, Concrete, Asphalt, Signs and Markings, HVAC, or Pesticide Applicators desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Hand sweep or shovel debris from right-of-way.
  • Maneuver sweeping vehicle in traffic with care.
  • Perform minor field repairs and maintenance on equipment.
  • Maintain logs, supply lists, and report needs to supervisor.
  • Operate light equipment and forklift as needed.

Job description

This is a temporary position that works in the city’s right-of-way, assisting with street sweeping operations under general supervision.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None
  • Hand sweep or shovel debris and rubbish from right-of-way.
  • Maneuver class-C sweeping vehicle in light to heavy traffic, using skillful driving techniques.
  • Make minor adjustments and repairs in the field as necessary to properly utilize C-class sweeping equipment.
  • Maintain logs and records of work performed; maintain supply lists; report to supervisor regarding needed equipment.
  • Small equipment operations
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used.
  • Clean and care for tools and equipment.
  • Apply safe work practices at all times.
  • Follow predetermined cleaning schedule, keep records of areas maintained, and other conditions determined by supervisor.
  • Forward reports to supervisor on street cleaning conditions, i.e., additional areas needing hand sweep, abandoned vehicles or materials in streets. Deposit refuse piles at specified locations and properly barricade as necessary.
  • Perform daily equipment check.
  • Respond to emergency and special street cleaning needs as required.
  • Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights-of-way.
  • Maintain and repair public right-of-way including trash pick-up and removal and weed abatement.
  • Recycled items collection and storage.
  • Operate and maintain light equipment in public right-of-way and City property.
  • Operation of forklift.
  • Collection and handling of anti-freeze, batteries, oil, and paint (ABOP).
  • Landscape Maintenance.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Operate power equipment such as weed whips, and gas blowers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
