Job summary

Fitzgerald Public Schools is seeking a Maintenance Assistant (Grounds) to support the maintenance department with grounds activities district-wide. The role offers a flexible year-round schedule aligned with school needs, including alternate shifts when school is not in session.

Responsibilities include lawn care, field prep, facilities upkeep, snow removal, light electrical/plumbing tasks, and reporting on work progress. A valid Michigan driver’s license and ability to lift 50 lbs are required.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license(s) and have & maintain a good driving record.
  • Physically capable of performing all duties and responsibilities in the job description.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Willingness to work a flexible year-round schedule, including overtime.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance equipment related to the areas described in the job description.
  • Must be able to work from ladders and scaffolds.
  • Willingness to complete additional training and learn additional job-related skills as required.
  • Willingness to obtain certification in the application of pesticides, herbicides, and other materials within one year of obtaining the position.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to read and apply documents such as handbooks, Board Policies, contracts, safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all staff and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Cuts, edges, trims, weeds, plants, fertilizes, and treats (using pesticides/herbicides, if necessary) district grass, shrubbery, trees, plants, plant beds, etc.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields and related equipment in a safe condition.
  • Maintains and repairs cement, asphalt, turf, playground surfaces, fencing, signage, bleachers, playground structures, and other outside areas/structures, including painting.
  • Performs snow/ice removal, including applying salt and other products to maintain safety.
  • Performs preventive and minor corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs trash pickup of lawns, parking lots, etc., and empties district trash barrels as assigned.
  • Operates assigned vehicles safely and reasonably, ensuring all contents within the vehicle during operation.
  • Preventive maintenance and minor repairs on district mechanical equipment, such as cleaning HVAC coils, filter changes, lubrication, belts, general cleaning, etc., following established standards.
  • Performs all the work necessary to achieve a high degree of cleanliness for the assigned areas following district-established procedures.
  • Perform minor electrical or plumbing repairs following established standards.
  • Perform patching, sanding, and other repairs, including applying appropriate coatings to district surfaces following established standards.
  • Assists in determining the types, quantities, quality, etc., of materials, tools, and equipment required to complete assignments.
  • Provides oral and/or written reports regarding equipment, materials, work accomplished, work in progress, and other areas, as requested.
  • Utilizes district work order management system to generate and complete work orders, entering appropriate data (labor time, materials ordered/used, completion data, etc.) as necessary.
  • Maintains awareness of and takes appropriate corrective action or reports discrepancies and items needing repair or other attention.
  • Maintains awareness of the importance of good public relations by assisting staff, students, and non-school personnel.
  • Works cooperatively with others to determine the best methods to accomplish assigned work.
  • Provides other assistance to the Maintenance departments as directed.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned.

JOB GOAL

The Grounds Maintenance Assistant is responsible for providing support to the maintenance departments, primarily in the area of grounds maintenance. The assigned work shift for the Grounds Maintenance Assistant will be flexible throughout the year to meet the demands of the educational programs and district needs. The Grounds Maintenance Assistant reports to the maintenance department administrator and department leader.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
