The Communications and Instruments Division provides leadership in the development and infusion of technologies that enable advanced flight sensors, instruments, and deep space communications. Our expertise spans the entire electromagnetic spectrum—from RF through ultraviolet (UV) — and includes micro-electro-mechanical systems and quantum engineering. We create novel material systems and fabrication techniques that unlock new concepts and mission architectures. We pioneer deep space communication theory, implement advanced communication systems (Earth, planetary surfaces and deep space flight) and develop navigational tracking to understand where we are and how to ensure robust engineering and science data return. The Instrument Systems, Microdevices and Sensors Section develops new technologies spanning quantum, micro- and nano-devices that enable advanced flight sensors, instruments, and transition them to flight infusion. We lead and support Payload and Instrument System Engineering and Instrument Integration and Test functions across D36 product lines. We partner with academic institutions and science communities. Instruments supported in our section include, but are not limited to spectrometers, radiometers, magnetometers, microwave radiometers, and Ultraviolet (UV)/Visible (VIS)/Infrared (IR)/Far-IR imagers.
