  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on district buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC systems, plumbing fixtures, electrical systems, doors, windows, ceilings, flooring, and other building components.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance to reduce equipment failures and extend facility life.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repair situations.
  • Diagnose maintenance problems and determine repair methods.
  • Perform minor carpentry, painting, masonry, drywall, roofing, and concrete repairs as needed.
  • Maintain boilers, water heaters, pumps, lighting systems, and mechanical equipment.
  • Assist with setting up facilities for school events and activities.
  • Operate maintenance vehicles, tools, and equipment safely.
  • Maintain work orders and inventory records; inspect facilities for safety hazards.

Maintenance Technician (Multi-Skilled)

Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Director of Maintenance or Maintenance Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of school district facilities to ensure safe, clean, and efficient learning environments. This position requires experience in one or more skilled trades, with preference given to candidates possessing expertise in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or other specialized maintenance skills. The Maintenance Technician responds to work orders, performs inspections, and assists with emergency repairs while maintaining compliance with district policies and safety standards.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Technical training, trade certification, or vocational education preferred.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in facility maintenance, construction, or a skilled trade preferred.

  • Experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, or related trade preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate maintenance vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, and inventory records.

  • Inspect facilities regularly to identify safety hazards and needed repairs.

  • Comply with OSHA regulations, district safety procedures, and applicable building codes.

  • Assist with grounds maintenance and other maintenance duties when assigned.

  • Work cooperatively with school administrators, faculty, staff, and fellow maintenance personnel.

  • Participate in after-hours, weekend, or emergency call-outs as required.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor or Director of Maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of building maintenance procedures and construction practices.

  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical systems.

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work orders.

  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.

  • Skill in safely operating hand tools, power tools, lifts, and maintenance equipment.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.

  • Climb ladders, work from elevated platforms, crawl, kneel, stoop, bend, and work in confined spaces.

  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday.

Working Conditions
  • Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, electrical equipment, and varying temperatures.

  • Occasional evening, weekend, and emergency work may be required.

  • Travel between school sites throughout the district is required.

Terms of Employment
  • Full-time position.

  • Twelve (12) month employment.

  • Salary and benefits according to the Dallas County Board of Education salary schedule.

  • Evaluation conducted annually in accordance with Board policy.

Preferred Skills

Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • HVAC certification and repair experience.

  • Plumbing installation and repair experience.

  • Electrical troubleshooting and repair experience.

  • Carpentry or construction experience.

  • Welding or fabrication skills.

  • Locksmith or security hardware experience.

  • Experience maintaining commercial or educational facilities.
