Position Description
Class Title: Maintenance Mechanic 3-Golf Course
Grade Number: 14M, $24.41 per hour
Department: Parks & Recreation
Bureau: Municipal Golf Course
Union: S.E.I.U.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a wide variety of duties to maintain, repair, and operate reel and rotary mowers, tractors, sprayers and aerators, grass and wood cutting, and other equipment at the Allentown Municipal Golf Course, as well as other city park facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May exercise supervision over other members of the work force designated to assist with jobs that require additional help and will act as crew leader on these occasions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
" Works from equipment manuals, specifications, general instructions, and broad knowledge of specialized equipment, maintenance, and repair methods.
" Visually inspects and maintains equipment to ensure quality of cut and to prevent damage to turfgrass.
" Diagnoses cause of equipment malfunction and institutes repair.
" Performs preseason maintenance on all equipment and make ready for upcoming season.
" Troubleshoots reported problems and resolves them in a timely manner.
" Works in a variety of weather conditions while using and or repairing equipment.
" Makes repairs in the field to broken equipment.
" Maintains equipment and tools in good condition.
" Repairs irrigation heads, valves and pumphouse equipment.
" Performs minor burning and welding to maintain or repair Golf Course, Park equipment and structures
" Prepares parts and materials lists needed to facilitate repairs and maintain inventory needed to maintain equipment.
" Maintain required records on preventive maintenance, repairs, and inventory
levels.
" Replaces or repairs process equipment components, such as, valves, pipes and flanges.
" Performs overhaul of gasoline, diesel, and two cycle small engines as required.
" Occasionally may fabricate replacement parts and repair equipment using lathe, power saws, drill press, and grinding equipment.
" Dismantles, replaces, and repairs work for defective parts and components on equipment such as pumps, power units, compressors, chlorinators, chemical feeders, and similar equipment and related controls, gauges, and recorders.
" Reassembles and tests performance of units repaired.
" Performs other duties, including those of other classifications (higher or lower) and standby crews as assigned and/or as conditions warrant.
" Required to work overtime during emergency/non-emergency situations including night shift and weekends as needed.
" Observes rules and practices on quality of work, personal conduct, and safe, effective and courteous service to the community, and provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens, and internal departments.
" Performs related work as may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
A. High School diploma or equivalent
B. Four years of experience repairing small equipment with diesel, gas and two cycle motors
C. Four years of experience of a golf course mechanic or equivalent education
D. Equivalent combination of related education and experience
E. Possession of a valid PA CDL class B driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 working days.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A. Ability to repair, maintain, and operate all equipment required for Golf Course maintenance and maintenance of the City's Park system.
B. Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods.
C. Mechanical knowledge, which enables the car mechanic to handle various tools efficiently and use them effectively.
D. Excellent knowledge of internal combustion and diesel engines.
E. Ability to sharpen (grind) reels and bed knives on reel mowers.
F. Observe all safety precautions for protections against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals and ability to wear personal protective equipment when necessary.
G. Knowledge of welding, burning, and fabrication.
H. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
I. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
J. Ability to drive and operate a variety of golf course vehicles, mowers, tractors and aerators and sprayer under varying weather conditions.
K. Must possess physical ability to work under all conditions encountered, including managing heavy parts and working in various physical positions.
L. Ability to establish working relationships with other employees and supervisors.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Daily use of specific Golf Course equipment, such as Triplex reel mowers, Walk Behind reel mowers, diesel Fairway mowers, diaphragm pump sprayers, tractors and 3-point hitch attachments; hand tools, such as wrenches, ratchets, screw drivers, hammers; power tools, such as drills, saws, impact wrenches, grinders; welding and burning equipment. Floor jacks and other related lifting and positioning equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in all outdoor weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
The employee occasionally works in places that occasionally is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee frequently works with hot materials that could cause severe burns if not wearing the proper clothing or proper safety equipment.
The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.
