Job summary

Compunnel, Inc. is seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to support analysis, development, maintenance, and modernization in enterprise mainframe environments. You will work with COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, and CICS, analyze legacy apps, and contribute to modernization strategies.

Responsibilities include batch processing, job scheduling with Control-M, debugging, and collaboration on integrations with distributed systems. Strong debugging and SDLC/Agile experience are required.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years with mainframe technologies including COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL and CICS.
  • Experience with batch processing, job scheduling, and production support.
  • Proficiency with Control-M or similar enterprise scheduling tools.
  • Experience debugging with mainframe tools like Xpediter, File-AID, Abend-AID.

Job description

The Mainframe Developer will support application analysis, development, maintenance, production support, and legacy modernization initiatives within enterprise mainframe environments. The role requires strong hands-on expertise in COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, and CICS, along with experience analyzing legacy applications, identifying dependencies and optimization opportunities, and contributing to modernization and migration strategies. The developer will also support batch processing, job scheduling, debugging, integrations with distributed systems, testing, deployment, and post-production validation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform code screening, analysis, and scraping of existing mainframe applications to identify dependencies, inefficiencies, risks, and optimization opportunities.
  • Analyze legacy applications and contribute to modernization, transformation, and migration strategies.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain COBOL, DB2, and CICS-based applications.
  • Develop, enhance, and manage JCL jobs supporting batch processing and workflow scheduling.
  • Work with Control-M and enterprise scheduling tools for job automation, monitoring, and issue resolution.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support integrations with distributed systems, APIs, and downstream applications.
  • Perform impact analysis and support application enhancements, defect fixes, and ongoing maintenance activities.
  • Ensure adherence to coding standards, performance best practices, and security guidelines.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, code changes, process flows, and operational procedures.
  • Support QA, UAT, deployment, and post-production validation activities.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience with mainframe technologies including COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, and CICS.
  • Strong experience with batch processing, job scheduling, and production support environments.
  • Experience with enterprise scheduling tools such as Control-M.
  • Proficiency with mainframe debugging and analysis tools such as Xpediter, File-AID, and Abend-AID.
  • Strong experience analyzing and troubleshooting legacy mainframe applications.
  • Experience supporting application modernization, transformation, or migration initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working in Agile and SDLC-driven environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with technical and business stakeholders.
