Job summary

Horsburgh & Scott in Cleveland, OH seeks an Experienced Machinist to set up and operate Boring Mills, Lathes, Hobbing and Grinding Machines for gearing parts. Experience on Okuma and Puma preferred. Read blueprints, measure parts, and edit G/M-codes; strong quality and safety mindset required. Shift 6:00am–2:30pm; overtime Saturdays may be required.

Qualifications

Job Summary:

Experienced Machinist - Westside Cleveland

As a Machine Operator for H&S, you’ll be setting up and operating Boring Mills, Lathes, Hobbing, and Grinding Machines to machine industrial gearing parts to specific tolerances. Experience running Okuma and Puma lathes and mills highly preferred. The operator is responsible for operating controls, setting offsets, editing programs, some deburring, and performing self-inspection of parts in-process and upon completion for conformance to requirements. The Operator will also use large overhead cranes and other large equipment.

• Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to produce metal parts.
• Review electronic or written blueprints or specifications for a job.
• Calculate where to cut or bore.
• Shape steel, aluminum, titanium, plastic, silicon and other materials.
• Determine how fast or slow work piece is fed into machine.
• Determine how much material to remove.
• Select tools and materials for the job.
• Plan the sequence of cutting and finishing operations.
• Mark the work piece to show where cuts should be made.
• Position work piece on the drill press, lathe, or milling machine.
• Monitor and control feed rate and speed.
• Ensure work piece is properly lubricated and/or cooled.
• Regulate temperature of work piece.
• Detect problems by listening for specific sounds.
• Adjust cutting speed to compensate for harmonic vibrations.
• Monitor the accuracy of cuts.
• Replace dull cutting tools.
• Check accuracy of work against blueprints and specifications.
• Produce large quantities of parts.
• Determine how automated equipment will cut a part.
• Determine cutting path.
• Concert path, speed, and feed information into set of instructions for machine tool.
• Use manual and computer-controlled machinery.
• Write basic programs.
• Modify programs in response to problems.

Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum of three to five years or more experience on Manual CNC Horizontal Boring Mills, Lathes, and Grinders, and proficiency with large-part machining and blueprint reading; with the understanding of geometric tolerancing and dimensioning.
• Must be able to perform own setups, measure parts that consistently result in precision quality parts.
• Large overhead crane experience and move large work pieces.
• Must be able to edit G and M-codes, trouble shoot jobs and make adjustments as required.
• Strong shop mathematics (trigonometry) aptitude and the ability to use precision measuring instruments (calipers, mics and other gauges).
• Must have the ability to use a feed and speed chart or calculator to determine appropriate feeds, speeds, and depths of cut.
• Understanding of metal properties and appropriate cutting tools.
• Positive attitude required; dependable, self-starter and the willingness to help others.
• Ability to work in a large manufacturing environment and performs well with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodation.

• Shift is 6:00am to 2:30pm with Overtime required on Saturdays based on workflow

Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
• Proficiency in the use of precision measuring instruments and machinist hand tools.
• Strong understanding of machining practices, cutting tools, feeds, and speeds.
• Experience with CNC-controlled and/or manual boring mills.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Commitment to quality, accuracy, and safety.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 2–5 years of experience operating boring mills or similar heavy machining equipment in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience machining large components and tight-tolerance parts preferred.
• WorkKeys Certification or equivalent technical certification is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to frequently bend, reach, climb, and perform repetitive motions.
• Ability to lift, move, and position materials weighing up to 50 pounds independently and heavier materials with lifting devices.
• Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and material handling equipment (training provided as required).
• Industrial machine shop environment with exposure to moving machinery, noise, vibration, heat, and metalworking fluids.
• Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Safety-sensitive position requiring adherence to all company and customer safety requirements.
