POSITION SUMMARY:
Sets up and operates various conventional and/or numerically controlled machining centers on complex and challenging jobs. Works from blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, verbal instructions, and engineering, tooling, or equipment information. Contributes to lean initiatives to increase productivity and reduce costs. Works independently with minimal guidance within a team environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates multiple machines efficiently, possibly simultaneously, adapting or improvising tooling as needed. Requires broad knowledge of production machining technology, skills, and shop techniques, along with diversified experience.
- Sets up, adjusts, and operates a variety of machines to perform complex production operations with close tolerances, multiple dimensional relationships, and specific finish requirements.
- Interprets customer requirements from blueprints, drawings, specifications, quality directives, charts, and verbal instructions.
- Collaborates with engineering to resolve drawing errors, suggest design modifications, and address product/process issues.
- Implements manufacturing methods using standard production machines, materials, and tooling; may assist with tooling design.
- Performs complex setups, possibly involving multiple workpiece stations and custom or standard holding devices.
- Develops and defines processes with limited documentation as needed.
- Troubleshoots and resolves machining problems.
- Ensures high-quality and efficient machining and inspection of parts, using precision measuring instruments and possibly a CMM.
- Maintains equipment to ensure cleanliness, accuracy, and reliability.
- Performs statistical process control (SPC) regularly as per division requirements.
- Uses advanced shop mathematics, including trigonometry, and has general knowledge of metal characteristics and processing requirements.
- Contributes to lean initiatives by identifying improvement areas and applying lean concepts and tools.
- Provides guidance in workload prioritization based on business needs.
- Follows safety policies and maintains a clean work area.
- Trains and mentors less experienced team members.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least five years of industry-related machining experience in a high-tech manufacturing environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Handles multiple tasks with changing priorities to meet customer needs.
- May require specialized certifications (e.g., certified operator).
- Proficient in reading and following blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
- Skilled in complex machine setups and evaluations.
- Knowledgeable in advanced shop mathematics, including trigonometry.
- Ability to implement lean initiatives.
- Effective communication skills and team collaboration abilities.
- Mentoring and training skills, serving as a resource to others.
- Proficient in interpreting reports and using job-specific software and systems.
TYPICAL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods. Manual dexterity and hand operation skills are necessary. Visual acuity for close vision. May need to lift up to 50 lbs.
