The Machinist is responsible for operating machine tools to produce precision metal parts. Produces small batches or large quantities of metal parts. Ensures products meet precise specifications.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Operates machine tools such as saws, lathes, milling machines, and grinders to produce metal parts.
- Reviews electronic or written blueprints or specifications for a job.
- Calculates where to cut or bore using a measuring device.
- Marks the workpiece to show where cuts should be made.
- Determines how fast or slow workpiece is fed into machine.
- Determines how much material to remove.
- Selects tools and materials for the job.
- Plans the sequence of cutting and finishing operations.
- Changes out tooling and saw blades as needed.
- Positions workpiece on the drill press, lathe, or milling machine.
- Monitors and controls feed rate and speed.
- Ensures workpiece is properly lubricated and/or cooled.
- Detects problems by listening for specific sounds.
- Adjusts cutting speed to compensate for harmonic vibrations.
- Monitors the accuracy of cuts.
- Replaces dull cutting tools.
- Checks accuracy of work against blueprints and specifications.
- Complies with all safety and hazardous material procedures, wearing protective equipment as required to meet or exceed OSHA and company requirements.
- May provide training to other employees on machining, assembly, inspection, and test procedures.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of the workspace.
- Uses and reads measuring tapes, calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools.
- Performs setups and creates setups on new jobs.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintains accurate records.
- May operate forklift trucks, overhead cranes, and other metalworking machinery.
- May need additional training or certification.
- Provides assistance to other departments as needed.
- Participates in improvement teams and meetings.
- Identifies opportunities for improvements and submits suggestions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with ISO 9001 Quality Management System requirements when applicable.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, and kneel regularly.
- Manual dexterity and coordination: hand/eye movements, motor control.
- Visual effort for reading documentation or viewing screens.
- Coordinate limbs while stationary.
- Work in a factory environment with noise, chemicals, and machinery exposure.
- Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
