Job description

Description:

Under direct supervision, assists with the setup, operation, and adjustment of conventional or automatic machines such as Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) machines. Works from drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts for repairs, experimental apparatus, or prototype equipment. Reads CNC programs. Work is routine, and machining is performed to ordinary tolerances. Requires basic knowledge of various metals and measurement techniques used in machining processes. Typically requires a high school education or equivalent and two years of experience.

Responsibilities:

  1. Write, edit, and modify programs for CNC machines.
  2. Operate CNC machines according to exact tolerances specified on engineering prints.
  3. Set up and operate manual lathes, saws, cutting tools, and slotting tools to meet precise tolerances.
  4. Perform routine inspections and minor maintenance.
  5. Troubleshoot and correct operational and quality issues.
  6. Ensure compliance with operational and safety guidelines.
  7. Perform housekeeping duties as required.
  8. Meet all production standards.
  9. Operate entire cell/area or multiple machines as a machinist.
  10. Work in a constant state of alertness.
  11. Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  12. Work cooperatively with co-workers.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids:

  • Computer
  • Measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, and tape measures
  • Hand tools
  • Lifting devices such as overhead cranes and hoists
  • Engineering drawings and prints

Hours Worked:

The Machinist normally works a 40-hour week. Some overtime may be required to meet production demands.

Qualifications:

  • Post-high school education with emphasis on machinist trade.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a machinist.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Ability to write CNC programs.
  • Ability to set up and operate manual lathes and other machines to precise tolerances.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic maintenance skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
