We are fascinated by the way it will change the world of tomorrow. Based on this understanding, we are developing the solutions for today and tomorrow. SCHUNK products stand for quality. Our products are built on all of the expertise and experience we have amassed for generations. Our goal is to get a little bit better every single day as a team.

Primary Purpose of the Machinist – CNC Milling Center

The CNC Milling Center Machinist independently sets up and operates CNC-controlled multi-axis milling machines to produce high-quality tooling, workholding, and automation products in SCHUNK’s modern, climate-controlled manufacturing environment. This role creates and optimizes programs based on drawing requirements while also leveraging existing programs, setup sheets, and collaboration with manufacturing and design engineers to determine the most effective methods for producing high-precision components. Success in this position requires strong ownership of parts throughout the machining operation, organized management of tooling and fixtures, thorough inspection, and clear communication to maintain quality, machine efficiency, and continuous improvement.

What You Will Do:
  • Interpret technical drawings, GD&T, dimensions, tolerances, and job requirements to plan and execute machining operations.
  • Partner with manufacturing and design engineers to refine machining strategies, improve manufacturability, and support new or updated production processes.
  • Select, build, monitor, and change cutting tools according to setup and program requirements and machining performance.
  • Install and align fixtures, workholding, and accessories to ensure accurate, repeatable, and efficient production.
  • Develop programs from drawing requirements and adjust existing programs, machine data, and setup parameters as needed.
  • Independently set up and operate CNC multi-axis milling machines.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using inspection sheets and precision measuring instruments to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Take ownership of parts throughout the machining operation, ensuring quality, accuracy, and completion of all required process steps before moving parts to the next stage.
  • Support raw material flow and prepare for upcoming production requirements.
  • Keep tools, gauges, fixtures, and work areas organized and production-ready.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and cross-functional teams regarding process needs, improvements, production challenges, and quality concerns.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace, perform routine machine upkeep, and report maintenance issues promptly.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree related to machining preferred.
  • 3+ years of CNC machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment, with strong hands-on experience in milling operations.
  • Ability to independently set up and operate CNC multi-axis milling machines.
  • Experience creating or optimizing CNC programs to meet drawing requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Ability to calculate dimensions, tolerances, offsets, feeds, speeds, and material requirements.
  • Ability to apply geometric and trigonometric concepts to support machining setup, alignment, and inspection.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining, tooling, or production issues and make sound decisions to maintain workflow and quality.
  • Ability to input, modify, and adjust data, offsets, and programs using CNC machine controllers.
  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
Preferred (Plus)
  • Previous 5-axis milling experience.
  • Background in conversational programming.
  • Experience with Siemens controllers.
