Job Title: Machinist – 3rd Shift
Job Description
This role sets up and operates CNC machines and related equipment within an assigned cell to produce precision components that meet strict quality and safety standards. You will interpret technical plans and blueprints, perform accurate measurements, and ensure machines run efficiently through careful monitoring, adjustment, and preventive maintenance on the 3rd shift.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC machines and all other equipment in the assigned cell to produce precision parts according to specifications.
- Transfer commands from servers to computer numerical control (CNC) modules using computer network links to load and run programs.
- Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces on machines using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or to change tooling, setups, or workpiece placement according to required machining sequences.
- Lift and handle finished workpieces either manually or with hoists and cranes, following safe material-handling practices.
- Measure dimensions of finished workpieces using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures to verify conformance to specifications.
- Listen to machines during operation to detect abnormal sounds such as those caused by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and make adjustments to correct issues.
- Monitor control panel displays and compare readings to specifications to detect malfunctions and take corrective actions.
- Perform preventive maintenance on assigned machinery, tools, and component parts within the cell and ensure proper usage and care.
- Apply knowledge of machines, tools, and production processes to troubleshoot problems and improve machining performance.
- Conduct tests and inspections of products or processes to evaluate quality and performance and document findings as required.
- Identify complex machining or process problems, review related information, develop options, and implement effective solutions.
- Follow all safety procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Work the 3rd shift schedule of 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Wednesday nights, and support production needs within that timeframe.
Essential Skills
- Proven ability to set up and operate CNC machines, including lathes and mills, in a manufacturing environment.
- Hands‑on experience as a CNC operator or CNC machinist using manual machines and inspection gauges.
- Strong knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Basic measuring skills and the ability to use precision measuring instruments accurately.
- Basic math, reading, and writing skills to perform calculations and document work clearly.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision parts.
- Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and its application in manufacturing quality control.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand and work with complex mechanical systems.
- Computer literacy, including the ability to work with CNC modules and transfer programs over computer networks.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including spelling, rules of composition, and grammar, to read instructions and complete documentation.
- Experience conducting tests and inspections of products or processes to evaluate quality and performance.
- Ability to identify complex problems, review related information, and develop and implement effective solutions.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of 6 to 9 months of on-the-job training or a related vocational training program.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working as a machine operator in a manufacturing environment.
- Comfort working with both CNC and manual machines in a production setting.
- Prior exposure to working with technical drawings and precision components.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality workpieces.
- Ability to work independently on the 3rd shift while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
- Willingness to follow strict safety protocols, including the use of hearing protection and specialized respiratory equipment when required.
