Primary Purpose of the Position

The machinist will operate machining tools to produce precision metal parts meeting exact specifications. Responsibilities include setting up and operating a variety of machine tools, reading blueprints to understand customer specifications, and using various tools to set up, operate, or repair machines.

Essential Functions / Duties
  • Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts, and assemble machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques.
  • Be technically proficient in the machining trade.
  • Be self-motivated and proactive in addressing needs and issues.
  • Read blueprints, sketches, and follow verbal instructions.
  • Understand upcoming work requirements and communicate needs proactively.
  • Maintain dimensional logs for all work and jobs.
  • Understand and follow the applicable sections of the SMC QC manual.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks.
  • Understand safety rules to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • CNC experience with Lathe and Milling machines.
  • Self-starter with good customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor, maintaining good relationships with management and co-workers.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Openness to learning new skills and collaborating with team members to create solutions.
  • Operate various machinery used in machining, such as milling and turning machines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous CNC Machining experience.
Education or Equivalent Experience
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED, or equivalent.
  • One year of technical school or five years of machining experience.
  • Completion of a four-year apprentice program in Machining.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math (fractions, decimals, trigonometry).
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex drawings.
  • Ability to operate overhead and jib cranes.
  • Interpret various instructions in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Solve complex technical problems with limited guidance.

Working Conditions

Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, humidity, chemicals, electrical shock, and vibration. Noise levels are usually moderate.

Physical Requirements

Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, talk, and hear. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, and smell. May occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
