Job summary

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ SEMAT Hawaii team in Pearl Harbor, HI seeks a skilled Machinist to machine, fabricate and refurbish shipboard components and support mechanical maintenance for USN vessels.

You will read drawings, set up lathes, mills and other tools, ensure dimensional accuracy with precision instruments, and work with customers and subcontractors to deliver quality parts for naval systems.

We are seeking a Machinist to serve on our SEMAT Hawaii team located in Pearl Harbor, HI. This Machinist will be responsible for machining, fabricating, and refurbishing newly designed and replacement shipboard components and providing mechanical maintenance and training to assist shipboard personnel in the operation, maintenance, and repair of specific items of engineering systems/equipment onboard USN Surface Ships.

What You Will Do
  • Machine, fabricate, and refurbish newly designed and replacement shipboard components utilizing templates and technical documentation, including ships’ drawings. Work includes removing, repairing, manufacturing new parts, modifying, and testing various shipboard components.
  • Set up and operate conventional lathe, milling, horizontal and vertical band saw, and vertical floor type drill press machines and other manual tools/machines.
  • Determine speeds and feeds, coolants, and lubricants or abrasives to be used to cut, turn, drill, mill, bore, tap, thread, ream, lap, hone, shape, and grind or finish items.
  • Maintain dimensional accuracy by inspecting parts using various precision measuring instruments, including sine plates, comparators, micrometers, calipers, v-blocks, angle plates, indicators, dial height gauges, go/no-go gauges, thread gauges, surface gauges, and other measuring tools.
  • Utilize bench tools, including files, deburring tools, file brushes, die handles, tap handles, mallets, spanner wrenches, combination squares, standard mechanic’s tools, and sandpaper/emery cloth.
  • Master understanding of production and processes.
  • Responsible for interfacing with customers, managing subcontractors, and ability to provide work direction to others.
  • May manage one or more multiple jobs.
  • Completes comprehension of specialty trades functions and tools. Performs a variety of complicated and non-routine tasks.
  • Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports, and task or trip reports.
  • Schedules, reports and briefs customers and senior management. May perform quality inspections on finished products.
  • Performs duties outside of specialty to completion installation or work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience.
  • Must have experience as a Machinist and shipboard maintenance and repair experience.
  • Must be able to read and interpret equipment and systems, ship drawings and ship technical documents and manuals.
  • Must be able to machine, fabricate, and refurbish newly designed and replacement shipboard components utilizing templates and technical documentation, including ships’ drawings.
  • Must be competent in the use of mechanical equipment and tools in corrective repairs efforts to accomplish ship repairs.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOD Confidential security clearance.
  • Start date contingent upon approval of base access, which is required for this position and continued employment.
Preferred Requirements
  • Prefer technical/professional certifications.
  • A current, valid DOD Confidential security clearance or higher.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
