Job summary

Astyra Corporation in San Diego is seeking a Machinist 1 for a two-month on-site contract. The role focuses on waterjet machining of composites and operation of a range of machine tools to tight tolerances.

You will read blueprints, set up operations, measure with precision instruments, and monitor quality. Prior apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience are preferred, as is experience with Flow software.

Qualifications

  • Formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings or blueprints.
  • Ability to set up and operate machine tools and precision grinders.
  • Familiarity with quality control methods and measurement instruments.
  • Experience with Flow software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to produce parts to tolerances.
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches and engineering specifications to determine sequence of operations and tooling.
  • Perform shop calculations for dimensions, tooling, feeds and speeds.
  • Measure and mark dimensions to lay out stock for machining.
  • Assemble precision parts into mechanical equipment and determine material requirements.
  • Monitor quality per statistical process or other control procedures.
  • Possess formal apprenticeship or equivalent training/experience in machining.
  • Run and set up flow waterjet where required.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings and tolerances with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate with team on continuous improvement.

Machinist 1

*This is a 2-month contract position

*On-site – Local to San Diego, CA only, please

Hours: 2nd shift, 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Description

Machinist 1 to support our machining department. As a member of the machining department, you’ll get to waterjet machine composites. This position will be based on-site at our San Diego structures site.

Responsibilities:
  • Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions. Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications
  • Determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup; uses a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments
  • Makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining
  • Fits and assembles precision parts into mechanical equipment and determines material, parts, and equipment required.
  • Some machines may be numerically controlled.
  • May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
  • Typically requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
  • Must have experience with setting up and running a flow waterjet.
  • Able to understand machining theory and strategy
  • Able to understand and interrogate mechanical drawings and tolerances
  • Ability to use common machine shop hand and measurement tools
  • Self-motivated, able to accomplish a high level of work
  • Team player, actively participating in continuous improvement projects with coworkers.
  • Demonstrates a high skill level with a desire for continuous learning

Preferred Skills/Knowledge/Experience:
  • Experience programming with Flow software.
  • Prior experience in an aerospace environment preferred
