Job summary

nVent is seeking a machinist for a temporary-to-hire position in North Carolina. The role involves fabricating custom components, operating CNC lathes and mills, and collaborating with Maintenance and Engineering to develop design solutions.

Ideal candidates have over one year of machinist experience, strong blueprint reading, and the ability to work with precision measuring tools. Physical endurance and safe shop practices are required.

Qualifications

  • Skilled with measuring tools: Dial indicators, Micrometers, Calipers, Comparator.
  • Solid mathematical skills applied to machine shop tech.
  • Basic computer skills including data entry and Microsoft applications.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate custom components and replacement parts for Maintenance and Engineering operations.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance and Engineering teams on design solutions.
  • Design and manufacture parts when drawings are unavailable.
  • Produce precision components from sketches or verbal specs.
  • Build jigs, fixtures, and tooling to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain machine tools safely and reliably.
  • Coordinate priorities with the Maintenance Manager to maximize productivity.
  • Troubleshoot and repair machinery during routine assignments.
  • Apply math and technical knowledge to machining processes.
  • Identify and implement equipment and process improvements to reduce downtime.

WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE IN THIS POSITION:
  • This is a Temp to Hire position. Based on 30, 60, 90 training.
  • Fabricate custom components and replacement parts to support Maintenance and Engineering Department operations.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance and Engineering teams to develop innovative and effective design solutions.
  • Design and manufacture custom parts in situations where engineering drawings or blueprints are unavailable.
  • Produce precision components from sketches, samples, and verbal specifications.
  • Design and build jigs, fixtures, and tooling to improve manufacturing efficiency, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of machine shop equipment to ensure reliability and support production demands.
  • Manage inventory levels of machine tooling, supplies, and fabricated spare parts, ensuring timely replenishment to support efficient machining operations and minimize production downtime.
  • Safely set up, operate, and maintain machine tools to prevent equipment damage, material loss, and operational disruptions.
  • Coordinate work activities and project priorities with the Maintenance Manager to maximize plant productivity and efficiency.
  • Independently operate, troubleshoot, and repair machinery and equipment on routine assignments while effectively handling new or unusual tasks with general guidance.
  • Apply mathematical principles and technical knowledge to support machining, fabrication, and precision manufacturing processes.
  • Continuously identify and implement equipment and process improvements to increase productivity, reliability, and reduce downtime.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulations while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Complete all assigned work safely, professionally, efficiently, and within established timeframes.
  • Maintain a regular work schedule and work overtime as needed to support operational requirements.
  • Perform other related duties and special assignments as directed, including work beyond normal shift hours or workweeks to meet business needs.
YOU HAVE:
  • Academic background: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in or with: Over one year experience as a machinist or equivalent.
  • Skills: Must have the skills necessary to operate the CNC, lathes, and mill machines. Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills. Skills in the use of measuring tools (Dial indicators, Micrometers, Calipers, Comparator). Strong fundamental mathematical skills and apply them to machine shop technologies. Skills in industrial math. Basic computer skills including data entry and retrieval, Microsoft applications (Outlook, Excel, etc.). Basic reading and writing skills. Communication skills verbally and written.
  • Abilities to meet the physical and environmental demands: Ability to work in a manufacturing environment that is not temperature controlled. Ability to wear the appropriate PPE. Ability to perform frequent strenuous work and able to lift up to 50 pounds.
