Job summary

Woodward is seeking an experienced Hone & Lap Machinist to join its precision manufacturing team in Santa Clarita, CA. You will set up and operate manual and horizontal honing/lapping equipment to produce high-quality components for aerospace applications.

The role requires hands-on setup experience, mandrel handling, and thorough inspection using micrometers and gauges to ensure extremely tight dimensional tolerances in a quality-driven environment.

Responsibilities

As a Hone & Lap Machinist, your responsibilities will include:

• Setting up and operating manual and horizontal honing and lapping machinery to manufacture precision‑engineered components.
• Independently setting up honing and lapping equipment, including mandrel selection, installation and adjustment.
• Selecting and utilizing appropriate lapping compounds, abrasive stones and tooling based on component specifications and material requirements.
• Producing high‑quality machined components to extremely tight dimensional and surface finish tolerances.
• Inspecting finished components using micrometers, bore gauges, comparators and other precision measuring equipment.
• Performing first‑piece inspections and ongoing quality checks throughout production runs.
• Maintaining honing stones, mandrels, cutting tools and measuring equipment to ensure consistent performance.

As a Hone & Lap Machinist, you will bring:

• Minimum 2 years' hands‑on machine setup experience within a precision machining or manufacturing environment.
• Essential experience with manual and horizontal honing/lapping processes, including machine setup and operation.
• Hands‑on experience setting up and adjusting mandrels for honing and lapping operations.
• Knowledge of lapping compounds, abrasive stone types and their applications across different materials and finishing requirements.
• Proven ability to manufacture and inspect precision components to tight engineering tolerances.
