Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, modify, assemble, and rebuild complex mechanical assemblies to support engineering development.
  • Operate mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, saws, and other tools to manufacture prototype components.
  • Work from engineering drawings and CAD models to fabricate, assemble, and test hardware.
  • Inspect components to ensure conformance to design requirements and quality standards.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and process development activities.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and system issues with appropriate tools.
  • Document fabrication processes, assembly procedures, and test results.
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop innovative solutions and improve performance.

Overview

Veeco's process equipment solutions enable the manufacture of LEDs, displays, power electronics, compound semiconductors, hard disk drives, semiconductors, MEMS and wireless chips. We are the leader in MOCVD, MBE, Ion Beam, Wet Etch single wafer processing and other advanced thin film process technologies. Our high-performance systems drive innovation in energy efficiency, consumer electronics and network storage and allow our customers to maximize productivity and achieve lower cost of ownership. We are currently looking for an Machinist to work in a team environment to assist engineers to maintain and support development of Veeco's etch and deposition equipment located in our Plainview Applications Lab as well as provide support to daily operations of the lab.

Responsibilities
  • Fabricate, modify, assemble, and rebuild complex mechanical and electromechanical assemblies in support of engineering development activities.
  • Operate machine shop equipment, including mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, saws, and other fabrication tools to manufacture prototype components and fixtures.
  • Work from engineering drawings, CAD models, schematics, and technical specifications to fabricate, assemble, and test hardware.
  • Inspect fabricated and assembled components to ensure compliance with design requirements and quality standards.
  • Support engineering activities including prototyping, testing, design validation, equipment upgrades, and process development.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and system performance issues using appropriate diagnostic and test equipment.
  • Document fabrication processes, assembly procedures, maintenance activities, and test results.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and process development personnel to develop innovative solutions and improve product performance.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in mechanical assembly, machine shop operations, equipment maintenance, or prototype fabrication.
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certification in Mechanical Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering Technology, Machining, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or high-technology environment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience assembling, repairing, and rebuilding complex mechanical systems.
  • Experience operating conventional machine shop equipment, including manual mills, lathes, drill presses, and precision measurement tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, engineering prints, assembly drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with prototype fabrication, fixture design, and equipment modifications.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new equipment, technologies, and manufacturing processes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with prototype machining and fabrication in a machine shop environment.
  • Familiarity with CAD software.
  • Experience rebuilding precision mechanical systems or other complex assemblies.
  • Knowledge of shop safety practices and quality-control procedures.
  • Experience with vacuum systems, semiconductor equipment is desirable.
Salary and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is $42,998.00 - $57,331.00, plus a bonus opportunity. We will consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors when determining your pay.
