The Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating machine tools to produce, repair, and modify precision parts and tooling used in production. This role interprets technical drawings, selects appropriate tooling and machining methods, verifies dimensional accuracy, and performs adjustments necessary to meet quality and production requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Machine Setup & Operation

• Set up and operate manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, saws, and other machine tools as required.
• Machine components from blueprints, drawings, sketches, or samples to specified dimensions and tolerances.
• Select appropriate cutting tools, work holding methods, speeds, and feeds based on the material and machining operation.

Precision Machining & Quality

• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, engineering specifications, dimensions, and tolerances.
• Use micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators, and other precision measuring instruments to verify work.
• Inspect in-process and completed parts, make necessary adjustments, and ensure finished work meets dimensional and functional requirements.

Tooling, Troubleshooting & Documentation

• Repair, rework, or modify tooling components, jigs, fixtures, and production parts as assigned.
• Troubleshoot machining problems, identify causes of dimensional or equipment issues, and make appropriate corrections within the scope of the position.
• Maintain accurate records of machining work, repairs, adjustments, and other required job information.

Safety & Shop Standards

• Perform routine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance on assigned machine tools and work areas.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment and follow all required safety procedures and PPE practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational, technical, or trade school training in machining is preferred.
• Three or more years of hands-on machining experience in a manufacturing, maintenance, or tool room environment is preferred.
• Proficiency operating manual mills, lathes, and grinders; CNC setup or operating experience is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to read technical drawings and machine parts to specified dimensions and close tolerances.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of shop mathematics, machining practices, cutting tools, materials, speeds and feeds, and work holding methods.
• Strong precision measurement skills using micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gauges, and related instruments.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with consistent attention to detail and quality.
• Ability to work independently, follow written and verbal instructions, and manage multiple machining priorities safely and accurately.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and perform frequent bending, reaching, handling, and close-detail machine work.
• Manual dexterity and visual acuity required for precision machining and inspection; use of required PPE is mandatory.
• Tool room and manufacturing environment with regular exposure to machining equipment, moving machinery, metal chips, lubricants, coolants, and noise.
• Work requires adherence to established safety procedures, machine guarding requirements, and PPE practices.
