Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a skilled Machinist to machine and modify parts from verbal instructions, drawings and solid models using 3 axis to 5 axis CNC equipment including waterjet, milling and turning centers. Strong CAD/G‑code skills and attention to detail are essential.

The role emphasizes safety, 5S discipline, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment. Willingness to travel and occasional off‑hours support may be required.

Qualifications

  • Formal trades or apprenticeship completed.
  • 5+ years CNC experience in machine trade.
  • Proficient in reading drawings and CAD models.
  • Knowledge of G-code programming and machining practices.
  • Willingness to travel or work nights/weekends/on-call as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Safely program, set‑up and operate multiple CNC equipment with minimal assistance.
  • Simultaneously operate more than one CNC machine at a time.
  • Read and adhere to all verbal and written processes.
  • Inspect parts using visual and hand inspection equipment (micrometers, calipers, etc.).
  • Inspect, change and offset cutting tooling in CNC equipment.
  • Maintain 5S and a clean, safe workspace.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Collaborate professionally with coworkers daily.
  • Travel or work nights/weekends/on‑call as required.

Join the power movement as a Machinist

This position will be responsible for machining or modifying parts per use of verbal communication, drawings and solid models using standard machine shop tooling such as 3 axis machining centers, waterjet, Trak mill and lathe, surface grinder and standard equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Safely program, set‑up and operate multiple CNC equipment with minimal assistance.
  • Simultaneously operate more than one CNC machine at a time.
  • Read and adhere to all verbal and written processes.
  • Inspect product utilizing visual and hand inspection equipment (microscopes, vernier calipers, micrometers, drop indicators, profilometer, etc.).
  • Inspect, change and make offsets to cutting tooling in CNC equipment.
  • Use 5S to maintain a clean and safe workspace.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Interact in a professional manner with coworkers on a daily basis.
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
  • Formal trades or apprenticeship programs.
  • Higher level trade school certification or degree.
  • 5 years experience in CNC machine trade.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Experience programming with CAD.
  • Basic knowledge of G-code.
  • Strong work ethic and high attention to detail.
  • Flexible ability to work in a fast‑paced team environment.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and sometimes confidential information.
  • Great communication skills.
  • Openness to working overtime or to arrange start time to benefit part run times as required.
  • Basic knowledge of welding and torches.
  • Knowledge of how to use a plasma cutter.
  • Basic knowledge of sheet metal fabrication.
  • Trained in time management.
  • Knowledge of how to calculate tolerance changes to atmospheric temperature changes in shops (CTE).
  • Full knowledge of Mastercam.
  • Experience with Haas machining centers.
  • 4 and 5 axis machining experience.
  • Waterjet experience.
  • EDM (electrical discharge machine) experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on‑call occasionally.
