Job summary

Columbus McKinnon is seeking a CNC machinist to set up and operate machining centers, producing metal parts from raw material in a team environment. You will read blueprints, interpret process sheets, and ensure parts meet precise tolerances.

The role requires performing milling, drilling, and related operations, selecting and changing cutting tools, and inspecting finished pieces. You will contribute to quality standards and assist with routine maintenance and clean-up.

Qualifications

  • Experience reading blueprints and process sheets to determine work
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and program sheets
  • Experience performing measurements to maintain tolerances within specs
  • Knowledge of selecting and installing cutting tools and tool changes
  • Familiarity with NC machining centers and related operations

Job Summary/Overview

This position requires a person to perform set ups and operate CNC equipment to manufacture metal parts from raw material in a team based environment. Plans and performs a variety of machine operations utilizing numerical control machining centers to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specifications by performing the following duties:

  • Interprets complicated drawings, program sheets, instructions, and process sheets to determine work to be done.
  • Read and understand blue prints.
  • Performs diversified operations on numerical control machining centers.
  • Performs a variety of milling, drilling, boring, or related operations to close and interrelated tolerances.
  • Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine machining sequence and dimensions of finished workpiece.
  • Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures workpiece in fixture according to setup instructions.
  • Selects and installs cutting tools in machine spindle or magazine.
  • Loads control media, such as disk, tape, or punch card, in machine control console or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed machine instructions from database.
  • Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
  • Changes cutting tools and location of workpiece during machining process as specified in setup instructions.
  • Performs a variety of inspection and gaging operations to insure maintenance of quality standards and specifications.
  • Measures workpiece for conformance to specifications.
  • Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Utilizes override control to correct conditions that are out of tolerance or operating unusually.
  • Adjusts machine feed and speed and changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
  • Machines materials other than metal, such as composites, plastic, and rubber.
  • Cleans machine, tooling, and parts.
  • Performs machine maintenance.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
