POSITION OVERVIEW

The Machinist sets up and operates ID cylindrical grinders, OD cylindrical grinders, boring mills, and/or lathes to restore aviation components in accordance with approved work instructions, drawings, specifications, and customer requirements. The position performs precision machining, grinding, measuring, and documentation while protecting part integrity, traceability, quality, and safety throughout the process.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review work orders, routers, drawings, specifications, and applicable instructions before beginning work; verify the correct part, revision, tooling, dimensions, tolerances, and operation requirements.
• Set up and operate one or more of the following manual machines: ID cylindrical grinders, OD cylindrical grinders, boring mills, and/or lathes.
• Perform internal and/or external cylindrical grinding to achieve the required diameter, concentricity, roundness, straightness, and surface finish.
• Perform boring mill and lathe operations, including facing, turning, boring, drilling, and related precision machining work, as assigned and qualified.
• Machine or finish aviation components to required dimensions, tolerances, surface finishes, and configurations without damaging the base material or plated surfaces.
• Use precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges and/or indicators, to verify work during and after machining.
• Complete routers, work orders, inspection entries, labor reporting, and other required records accurately and legibly to maintain part traceability.
• Identify worn or damaged tools, equipment problems, and process abnormalities; obtain authorization before deviating from established instructions.
• Handle and protect customer parts to prevent impact damage, contamination, corrosion, or loss of identification.
• Perform routine machine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance and maintain an orderly work area.
• Follow all applicable safety, environmental, quality, PPE, machine-guarding, lockout tagout, and housekeeping requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses:

• High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience.
• Prior experience operating one or more of the following: ID cylindrical grinders, OD cylindrical grinders, boring mills, or lathes.
• Aviation or aerospace machining experience is preferred but not required.

Skills:

• Ability to read and interpret work instructions, dimensions, tolerances applicable.
• Ability to set up and operate applicable machining or grinding equipment safely and accurately.
• Proficiency using precision measuring instruments and performing shop mathematics.
• Ability to maintain accurate production and quality records and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to recognize tool wear, abnormal machine operation, surface defects, and potential quality concerns.
