Job summary

Altec Industries, Inc. in Creedmoor, NC seeks a Machinist Technician to analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, and set up and operate machine tools to produce and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and tools. SolidWorks design work and machine programming are required, with a focus on quality and safety.

You will design fixtures, program machines, and implement improvements across the fabrication shop, ensuring conformance to specifications and tight tolerances.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Follow safety regulations and maintain a clean work area.
  • Design fixtures using SolidWorks.
  • Identify and implement machining improvements.
  • Program machines via offline programming and at the console.
  • Study blueprints to plan operations for tools and assemblies.
  • Verify dimensions with calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machines to spec.
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust parts for proper fit.
  • Assemble parts to make/repair/modify jigs and tools.
  • Conduct test runs and adjust as needed.
  • Inspect tools for finish and defects.
  • Polish surfaces and handle part finishing.
  • Position and secure machined parts for finishing.
  • Perform small weld tasks.
  • Fulfill duties assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, fit and assemble parts to make and repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools, and design fixtures using SolidWorks. Program machines at machine console as well as using offline programming. Make machining improvements throughout fabrication machine shop

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all safety regulations for the individual as well as other employees, including keeping the work area clean and in orderly condition as well as wearing all appropriate safety attire for the job that is being performed.
  • Design fixtures using SolidWorks.
  • Identify and implement machining improvements throughout fabrication machine shop.
  • Program machines through offline programming and at the machine console.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools or assemblies.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools and parts to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
  • Inspect finished tools for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
  • Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Perform small weld tasks
  • Perform all duties assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Skills Required
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skill: Basic skills in MasterCam computer software.

Required Skills: Basic computer knowledge. Basic skills in SolidWorks computer software. Ability to read and understand blueprints, mathematical knowledge (geometry), basic welding skills, basic machining skills, mechanically inclined, critical thinking skills (must be able to picture a finished product before beginning), basic machine programming skills.
