- Employee Type FT Non-Exempt
Description
Summary:
Dominion Technologies Group (DTG) builds custom, precision-machined components where no two jobs are quite the same. We are looking for a seasoned machine shop leader who thrives in a high-mix, low-volume environment and wants real ownership of the floor. As our Machine Shop Supervisor, you will lead our machining team, drive on-time delivery across a constantly changing job mix, and shape the processes, tooling strategy and people development that keep our shop competitive. This is a hands‑on leadership role with a direct line to the Manufacturing Manager and a genuine voice in how the operation runs and grows.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop the team: Supervise, coach and mentor machinists and operators; build skill depth and cross-training so the shop can flex across job types, set up efficiently and grow future leaders.
- Own shop performance: Balance safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale; set clear daily priorities and hold the team accountable to measurable results.
- Schedule a high-mix job flow: Sequence and prioritize jobs released from processing/engineering, balancing machine capacity, setups, rush orders and due dates to protect on-time delivery.
- Drive continuous improvement: Lead improvements in machining processes, setup reduction, workholding, tooling and cycle times using Lean and problem-solving methods.
- Manage metrics and visual controls: Track and report department KPIs (on-time delivery, scrap/rework, machine utilization, labor efficiency) and provide regular performance updates and recommendations to the Manufacturing Manager.
- Control materials, tooling and inventory: Plan and order raw materials and tooling to support the schedule, maintain appropriate inventory levels and look for cost savings without compromising quality.
- Champion safety: Model and enforce safe work practices, lead a clean and organized (5S) shop floor, and act quickly on hazards and near misses.
- Uphold quality: Ensure adherence to quality system requirements, support first-article and in-process inspection, and lead root-cause and corrective action on nonconformances.
- Partner across the business: Work closely with engineering, programming, quality and sales on manufacturability, quoting input and new or complex custom jobs.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of hands-on machining experience, including 5+ years supervising or managing a machine shop, ideally in a custom, job shop or high-mix/low-volume environment
- Strong working knowledge of CNC mills and lathes, setups, tooling, workholding, and machine maintenance needs
- Expert blueprint and shop print reading, including GD&T
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and inspection methods
- Proven track record of improving throughput, quality or cost through process and tooling improvements
- Experience scheduling and prioritizing work to meet delivery commitments in a fast-changing environment
- Solid computer skills, including ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office
- Strong leadership, communication and coaching skills with the ability to build a high-performing, accountable team
Preferred:
- Experience with multi-axis machining and CAM/CNC programming (e.g., G-code, Mastercam or similar)
- Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement training
- Experience in regulated or high-precision industries such as aerospace, defense, medical or energy
