Job summary

Thorlabs’ Newton, NJ machine shop seeks a Manufacturing Engineer to implement COGS reduction initiatives and drive automation and digital transformation. You will design high-density fixtures and tooling in collaboration with design engineers to improve producibility and runtimes, ensuring a modern, safe shop environment.

Ideal candidates have 1–3 years in CNC manufacturing, a B.S. in engineering, and strong problem-solving, communication, and Lean/ISO knowledge to support production and NPIs.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience in CNC Manufacturing and Engineering or relevant field.
  • B.S. Degree in Engineering or Equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in basic computer use (MS Office) and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge on SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
  • Working knowledge of standard CNC Machining processes.
  • Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot issues.
  • Knowledge of ISO and ASTM standards and documentation.
  • Working understanding of LEAN Principles.

Responsibilities

  • Implement COGS reduction initiatives, improving machine shop efficiency.
  • Design high-density fixtures and tooling to increase production and reduce runtimes.
  • Lead automation and digital transformation initiatives in the shop.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to ensure manufacturability of new products.
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing issues and shop needs.
  • Update processes and drawings to improve manufacturability and metrology.

The Machine Shop Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for implementing Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) reduction initiatives and the digital transformation and automation of the machine shop. Design new high-density fixture/tooling to increase production and runtimes and to improve efficiency and lights-out runtime. They will work closely with product design engineers to continually improve NPI and fixture strategy to deliver clear direction to our operators and customers, and to create a modern, safe, and productive working environment for shop employees. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, at certain times, it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following,

but are not limited to:

  • Successfully implement COGS reduction initiatives.

E.g., Improve machine prints, process sheets, Lean disciplines, tooling choices, jigs/fixturing- tooling design, high density fixturing for production, etc.

  • Successfully implement automation and digital transformation initiatives.

E.g., Automate repetitive tasks, install sensors and other systems to help utilize the data to improve productivity.

  • Identify and implement New Production Metrics to drive output and quality.
  • Improve in-process inspection methods and metrology equipment used throughout the machine shop.
  • Document and carry out shop floor implementation tests for new manufacturing processes.
  • Update drawings to improve manufacturability.
  • Work with the design engineering team to ensure manufacturability of new products.
  • Provide technical support for quality or manufacturing issues.
  • Provide support for any production needs in the shop.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools..

Experience:
  • 1-3 years of experience in CNC Manufacturing and Engineering or relevant field.
Education:
  • B.S. Degree in Engineering or Equivalent experience.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proficiency in basic computer use (MS Office) and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge on SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
  • Working knowledge of standard CNC Machining processes.

Annual pay range for this position is $71,000 -$94,000 depending on experience
