Job summary

WilmerHale is seeking an Artificial Intelligence Software Engineer to develop and implement cutting‑edge AI solutions and models. You will work with legal and business teams to conceptualize, develop, deliver and support AI‑driven services, with a focus on NLP, ML and large language models.

Responsibilities include staying current with AI advancements, optimizing models, documenting specifications, and mentoring teammates.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in Python with experience in ML libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Experience building recommendation models.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms and software engineering principles.
  • Familiar with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
  • Proficient in .NET technologies (C#, .NET Core, ASP.NET Core) and modern frameworks (React).
  • Strong SQL skills and ability to write complex queries on large datasets.
  • Experience with DevOps tools (GitHub, Azure DevOps).
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies in a fast-changing AI landscape.

What You Will Be Doing

The Artificial Intelligence Software Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing cutting‑edge AI solutions and models to solve complex problems and drive innovation at the firm. This includes working with the legal practices and business departments to support and improve their delivery of services by conceptualizing, developing, delivering, and supporting innovative solutions with a focus on AI and related technologies.

About the Role
  • Collaborates with cross‑functional teams to define AI project use cases, requirements, and objectives, ensuring alignment with overall business goals.
  • Conducts research to stay up to date with the latest advancements in generative AI, machine learning, and deep learning techniques and identifies opportunities to integrate them into our products and services.
  • Provides updates and recommendations to Director, Application Services.
  • Optimizes existing generative AI models for improved performance, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Develops clear and concise documentation, including technical specifications, user guides, and presentations, to communicate complex AI and related concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Contributes to the establishment of best practices and standards for AI development within the organization.
  • Interacts with business stakeholders and explains technical issues and approaches to a non‑technical audience.
  • Provides functional and technical support and enhancements for the firm's AI solutions.
  • Provides technical mentorship and guidance to other team members.
  • Creates and delivers end‑user training and documentation and provides second‑line support to other users.
  • Displays professionalism, quality service and a positive “can do” attitude to internal members/departments of the Firm.
  • Initiates building and maintaining strong relationships with team members across functions and more senior client stakeholders. Uses conflict‑resolution skills to facilitate strong team dynamics.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Proficient in Python and have experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Experience building recommendation models.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software engineering principles.
  • Familiar with cloud‑based platforms and services, such as Azure or AWS.
  • Demonstrated ability in .NET technologies using C# as well as related modern development languages and frameworks such as .NET Core, ASP.NET Core, REACT, etc.
  • Strong SQL skills, the ability to write complex, efficient queries against extremely large data sets is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop software/code (following firm standards) directly applicable to technology encompassed in assigned applications.
  • Experience with adherence to a Software Development Methodology like SCRUM and DevOps practices and tools like GitHub, Azure DevOps or other such tools and methodologies.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively to develop innovative solutions.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and use new technologies as the need arises.
  • Ability to work effectively with both users and technical staff in team‑oriented environments.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non‑technical personnel.
  • Ability to work successfully and independently in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures.
  • A strong background in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and software engineering is preferred.
  • Experience working with large‑scale language models such as GPT‑3/4, BERT, Dolly, LLaMA, PaLM2, etc.
  • Hands‑on experience with LLMs fine‑tuning is a plus.
  • Experience with natural language processing (NLP) techniques and tools, such as SpaCy and/or NLTK is a plus.
  • The ability to be self‑directed and learn new technologies quickly is also paramount as the AI technology landscape continues to change rapidly.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of education requirements.
Required Experience
  • 1‑2 years' experience delivering solutions with at least one of the following: TensorFlow, Pytorch, BERT and/or ChatGPT 3.
  • 2‑3 years of experience in applications and services integration and/or development, with significant specialization in one or more areas of the above-mentioned areas of technology.
  • 4‑5 years of applications web development experience using C# with either .NET Framework or NET CORE a plus.
  • Experience with the following is a big plus but not required: Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Graph, Messaging (Rebus, NServiceBus).
