Summary

The Machine Operator operates specialized machines such as door routers, stair routers, welders, plate cutters, table saws, planers, jointers, and component cutters to perform routing, boring, rip sawing, cross-cutting, beveling, grooving, and mitering of lumber or wood stock. Provides training and work direction to other machine operators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Selects and sets proper machine control settings and parts, such as placing the correct disk on saws and setting guides, according to work order and specifications.
  2. Selects material to be machined, including beams, headers, studs, fire blocking, plates, blocks, doors, and lumber.
  3. Starts machines, places wood stock on the table against guides, and pushes stock for cutting.
  4. Measures cut stock with rulers, calipers, or squares to verify dimensions, or sets dimensions on automated machines.
  5. Operates machines to cut, route, bore, etc., according to written or computer specifications.
  6. Labels cut stock or products with correct identifiers.
  7. Plans and assigns work tasks to meet production goals.
  8. Tracks and reports on job progress and team efficiency.
  9. Trains new employees on assembly tasks, tools, machinery, and safety procedures.
  10. Prepares inventory for future use.
  11. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and work areas following safety procedures.
Equipment Used

Air nail guns, stair routers, drills, planers, jointers, various saws, forklifts, door routing machines, shapers, hand tools, tape measures, and vehicles such as flatbeds or dump trucks.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, plus 1 year of experience or training in millwork, construction, or lumber industries. Mechanical aptitude and experience with machines are required. Knowledge of mill production components is preferred.

Certificates and Licenses

CDL A or B may be required. Forklift certification may also be necessary.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds regularly and stand occasionally. Reasonable accommodations available for disabilities.

Work Environment

Work may be loud, with environments such as construction sites or manufacturing floors.
