Job summary

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar Company, has a Kansas City, MO location seeking a skilled Machine Operator for a full-time, on-site role. The position involves operating and setting up machinery, performing quality checks, and aligning with safety procedures in a production environment.

You will work with wheelsets and axles, operate cranes, read blueprints, and maintain a clean, safe work area while supporting continuous production and maintenance tasks.

Qualifications

• High School education or GED is required.
• Prefer 3–5 years of experience operating various lathes or other machines.
• Must be able to perform quality inspections.
• Read precision instruments and gauges.
• Capable use of hand tools to include grinder.
• Work around overhead cranes and mobile equipment.
• Work as an effective team member.
• Working safely is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

• Works with new and used railroad wheelsets and axles.
• Operate overhead cranes and forklifts.
• Machine operator operates assigned machinery, monitors and optimizes efficiency, performs basic maintenance and quality checks.
• Performs all assigned machine shop operations.
• Set up and operates machines.
• Observe machine operations, detect defects and adjust machinery to improve performance.
• Operate machinery and equipment according to work instructions.
• Troubleshoot issues and submit maintenance work orders.
• Read blueprints or job orders to determine product specifications and tooling instructions.
• Follow reporting and recordkeeping procedures and report problems to supervisor.
• Maintain and clean machinery and work area; ensure safety procedures.
• Detect defective materials and report to management.
• Assist in other areas as needed by supervisor.

Key Job Elements

• Works with new and used railroad wheelsets and axles;
