Job summary

TOPS Products LLC in Missouri is seeking a skilled machine operator to set up, adjust, and operate a variety of cutting, binding, and folding equipment used to produce office products. You will monitor safety, quality, and productivity while coordinating multiple stations and ensuring dimensional accuracy according to job orders.

The role requires strong knowledge of paper properties, the ability to read measurements, and proficiency with hand tools and standard devices.

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of setup, adjustment, procedures, capabilities and limitations of equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of paper machinability and conditions to adjust machines.
  • Knowledge of limitations and capabilities of all machines for unusual set ups.
  • Familiarity with basic mathematics and the ability to read a tape measure.
  • Ability to use standard and specialized tools to adjust and maintain machines.
  • Skill in using hand tools and specialized tools to service powered machines.
  • Skill in operating equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing.
  • Ability to read and interpret written work and sequence machine operations.
  • Ability to exert physical force as described to move objects.

  • Set up, adjust and operate machines with multiple functions to produce printed materials.
  • Inspect equipment for safety and monitor safety, quality, output and productivity.
  • Work with crew through all aspects of production for a specific machine.

Job description

Set up, adjust and operate a variety of machines containing several cutting heads, control surfaces, ink towers or other attachments (i.e. inkjet and mailing devices, case making, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines and/or set up automatic machines containing multiple functions and station capabilities (power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binder) which can be electromechanically combined with other equipment and devices to produce a complete office product. Inspect equipment for safety issues. May operate automatic adhesive machines and make needed adjustments to coordinate the multiple work stations on a single machine. Work with crew though all aspects of production for a specific machine. Monitor safety, quality, output and productivity.

Responsibilities

Work is typically performed under minimal daily supervision, receiving guidance from manager/supervisor about the work that needs to be completed. Able to exercise high level of discretion and latitude in completing tasks.

  • Thorough knowledge of the setup, adjustment, procedures, capabilities and limitations of equipment to perform the full range of standard work.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of machinability of different paper weights, sizes, kinds and colors so as to be able to identify paper conditions (i.e. excessive moisture or curling that frequently requires additional machine adjustment).
  • Thorough knowledge of limitations and capabilities of all machines used to accomplish unusual set ups or machine combinations to produce unique or one of a kind printed materials.
  • Familiarity with basic mathematics (i.e. decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements contained in job orders and to make more complicated adjustments. Must be able to read a tape measure.
  • Ability to use the full range of standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain the functional accuracy and operating conditions of the machines.
  • Skill in making difficult adjustments to powered machines using hand tools (i.e. wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) as well as more specialized hand tools, usually furnished by the machine manufacturer.
  • Skill in operating complicated manufacturing equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing, tape machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret written work which indicates the number and sequence of machine operations required to complete the work and maintain dimensional accuracy in accordance with instructions provided.
  • Job requires ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
