Job summary

Pratt Industries – Hammond is seeking a Machine Operator for the 1st shift (5:00 AM – 1:30 PM) with starting pay of $20.00 per hour. You will set up, operate, clean, and troubleshoot corrugated machinery to meet customer demand while maintaining safety, quality, and efficiency in a fast-paced production area.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, prior manufacturing experience (6 months on corrugated equipment preferred), and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Safety & Compliance: follow Pratt Industries safety rules and participate in safety committees.
  • Quality Assurance: follow GMPs and quality procedures to ensure top-quality products.
  • Operational Efficiency: maximize machine utilization and improve setup times.
  • Training & Development: assist in training new team members and cross-train on machines.
  • Reporting & Maintenance: complete daily production reports and submit maintenance requests.
  • Flexibility & Teamwork: adapt to overtime or holiday work and collaborate with teammates.

Machine Operator – 1st Shift


Shift: 5:00AM – 1:30PM


Starting Pay: $20.00 / hr.


As a Machine Operator at Pratt Industries – Hammond, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of production machinery. This position involves a variety of tasks, including machine setup, operation, cleanup, and troubleshooting, with a focus on meeting customer demand and maintaining high-quality standards. You’ll work in a fast-paced environment, constantly striving for improvements in equipment efficiency while ensuring safety and cleanliness in your work area.

Key Duties and Success Factors:



  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure a safe working environment by adhering to all Pratt Industries Safety rules and procedures. Engage in safety committees and encourage colleagues to follow safety practices.

  • Quality Assurance: Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Pratt's quality procedures to ensure only top-quality products are delivered to customers. Prevent defective products by addressing issues during production.

  • Operational Efficiency: Maximize machine utilization by running equipment at optimal capacity and speed. Continuously improve setup times, minimize downtime, and identify maintenance needs to improve overall production efficiency.

  • Training & Development: Assist in training new team members, including Assistant Machine Operators and Production Utilities. Cross-train on various machines and positions to support plant operations and personal growth.

  • Reporting & Maintenance: Complete daily reports on production data, machine status, safety, and quality. Actively submit maintenance requests for necessary machine repairs and perform proactive housekeeping.

  • Flexibility & Teamwork: Adapt to changing production needs, including overtime or holiday work, and collaborate with team members to meet shifting goals.


Additional duties may be assigned by management.


What You’ll Need to be Successful:



  • Education: High school diploma or GED.

  • Experience: Preferred candidates will have prior experience in manufacturing, especially in the packaging, paper, or plastics industries. A minimum of 6 months' experience operating corrugated machinery is desirable.

  • Skills:

    • Ability to read and follow instructions related to safety, quality, and job procedures.

    • Strong mathematical skills for calculations such as percentages, volume, and measurements.

    • Mechanical understanding to identify equipment issues and improve machine performance.



  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and perform various tasks such as stooping, kneeling, and reaching.

  • Certifications: Lift Truck Operator License may be required.
