Job summary

Boyd is seeking a part-time Machine Operator in San Jose. The role blends operating a plotter cutter with assisting in the ink department, following job instructions, verifying materials, and maintaining safe, efficient machine operation.

You will review work orders, set up equipment, inspect for proper function, monitor production, document quantities and downtime, and support continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use a PC.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review production orders to ensure materials and specifications are available and accurate.
  • Set up and operate assigned production equipment per work instructions and safety procedures.
  • Inspect equipment prior to operation to ensure proper function and completed maintenance.
  • Follow safety requirements including JHAs and PPE.
  • Obtain approvals prior to startup to verify setup and readiness.
  • Monitor production runs and visually inspect products for quality and customer specs.
  • Document production quantities, scrap, downtime, and related information.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and propose process improvements.

This role supports manufacturing operations by following job instructions, verifying materials and setup requirements, monitoring product quality during production, and maintaining safe and efficient machine operation. This will be a hybrid roll between operating a plotter cutter and assisting in the ink department.

Description

The Machine Operator is responsible for operating production equipment to manufacture high-quality products in accordance with customer specifications and Boyd quality standards. This role supports manufacturing operations by following job instructions, verifying materials and setup requirements, monitoring product quality during production, and maintaining safe and efficient machine operation. This will be a hybrid roll between operating a plotter cutter and assisting in the ink department.

This is a part-time swing shift position, 25 to 30 hours/week

Responsibilities
  • Receive and review production work orders, job tickets, and assignments to ensure materials, tooling, and specifications are available and accurate prior to production.
  • Set up and operate assigned production equipment in accordance with established work instructions and safety procedures.
  • Inspect equipment prior to operation to ensure machines are functioning properly and maintenance requirements have been completed.
  • Follow all safety requirements, including Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), machine safety procedures, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Obtain required approvals prior to production startup to verify proper setup, materials, and machine readiness.
  • Monitor production runs and perform visual inspections to verify products meet quality and customer specifications.
  • Identify and report production, quality, or equipment issues to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Accurately document production quantities, scrap, downtime, and related production information.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and recommend process improvements to improve quality, efficiency, and scrap reduction.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in alignment with 6S standards.
  • Support team objectives and production schedules in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Basic
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use a PC
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment
Preferred
  • Color matching or work in an ink department
  • Prior manufacturing or machine operation experience
  • Experience reading blueprints or technical drawings
  • Experience in printing, die cutting, converting, or similar manufacturing processes
Skills
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality and accuracy
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Basic math and analytical skills

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during the work shift
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, twist, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the shift
  • Ability to frequently grasp and handle materials and tools
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to moving equipment and production noise
  • Vision abilities sufficient to inspect product quality and operate equipment safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone as needed
