Job summary

The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is seeking a Machine Maintenance Technician to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve CNC production equipment to maximize uptime, quality, and safety. The role supports preventive maintenance, electrical troubleshooting, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced precision machining environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Technical training or certification in maintenance preferred.
  • Experience repairing CNC machines and related production equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of CNC machinery and associated systems.
  • Dismantle/assemble, align, calibrate, inspect, and test CNC machines and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and coolant systems.
  • Diagnose equipment issues via manuals, diagnostics, and measurements.
  • Maintain uptime by addressing breakdowns and maintenance requests promptly.
  • Document actions in logs and coordinate with operators and management.
  • Follow OSHA, LOTO, machine guarding, and environmental regulations.

Job description

The Machine Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving CNC production equipment to maximize uptime, quality, and safety. Working under the direction of the Production Coordinator and/or Director of Operations, this position performs preventive maintenance, mechanical repairs, electrical troubleshooting, hydraulic and pneumatic system maintenance, and supports continuous improvement initiatives throughout the manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate is self‑motivated, safety‑conscious, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision in a fast‑paced precision machining environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of CNC machinery and related production equipment.
  • Execute work involving the dismantling, assembly, installation, adjustment, repair, alignment, calibration, inspection, testing, and maintenance of CNC machines and associated systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and coolant systems.
  • Diagnose equipment issues using visual inspection, machine diagnostics, service manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities including lubrication, alignment checks, coolant system maintenance, filter replacement, and inspection of wear components.
  • Maintain machine uptime by responding promptly to equipment breakdowns and production‑related maintenance needs.
  • Assist with chip management activities including cleaning chip conveyors, chip tanks, coolant systems, and replacing machine filters.
  • Support maintenance of facility equipment including air compressors, coolant systems, pumps, and other production support equipment.
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, equipment downtime, and corrective actions in maintenance logs and company systems.
  • Coordinate with machine operators, setup technicians, and management to identify and resolve equipment‑related issues.
  • Follow all OSHA regulations, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, machine guarding requirements, and environmental regulations including RCRA requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while supporting company safety, health, and wellness initiatives.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, and performance.
  • Contribute to personal learning, skill development, and future growth opportunities within the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and repair industrial equipment.

  • Ability to read and understand service manuals, repair procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems including motors, relays, sensors, switches, and machine control components.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and equipment reliability principles.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience maintaining CNC lathes, Swiss‑style CNC machines, machining centers, bar feeders, and related production equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting CNC controls, servo systems, drives, and PLC‑controlled equipment.
  • Technical degree, vocational training, or maintenance certification preferred.
  • Experience with Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Siemens, or similar CNC control systems is a plus.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Mechanical aptitude demonstrated through maintenance, machine repair, automotive repair, military service, technical training, or vocational schooling.
  • Relevant manufacturing or industrial maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screening.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to bend, stretch, kneel, squat, climb, and work in confined spaces while performing repairs and inspections.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Fine motor hand dexterity required for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Adequate vision and visual perception necessary to inspect equipment and perform detailed work.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels, moving equipment, and production activity.
  • Ability to maintain moderate to high levels of concentration while troubleshooting and repairing equipment.
  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, oils, coolants, lubricants, and metal chips.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
  • Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required to support production schedules and equipment maintenance needs.
