Job summary

Axis Automation in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking a Machine Builder to translate engineering prints, BOMs and project plans into turnkey automation systems. You will assemble equipment per drawings, troubleshoot during assembly, and collaborate with design engineers and project managers to ensure quality and on-time delivery.

The role requires willingness to travel about 20% to domestic and international destinations, including Mexico.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational/technical training valued.
• Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills are essential.

• Experience with hand and power tools; mechanical assembly or manufacturing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assemble custom automation equipment per drawings.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings and assembly/pneumatic prints.
• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues during machine assembly.
• Verify assemblies meet engineering specifications and quality standards.
• Collaborate with design engineers, controls engineers, technicians and project management to resolve build issues.
• Travel to customer sites for installation support (domestic and international).
• Operate shop equipment safely and follow LOTO and safety procedures.
• Lift objects up to 50 lbs regularly.
• Support Axis Operating Principles in daily work.

Position Overview: Machine Builders convert engineering prints, BOMs, and project plans into custom automation systems used by customers across a variety of industries. Machine Builders work closely with mechanical design engineers, controls engineers, controls technicians, machining specialists, and project management to bring each system to life.This position reports directly to the Build Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assemble custom automation equipment per drawings
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings and assembly and pneumatic prints
• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues during machine assembly
• Verify assemblies meet engineering specifications and quality standards
• Engage with mechanical design engineers, controls engineers, controls technicians, and project management to resolve build issues
• Travels to customer sites for installation support, including domestic and international destinations
• Operates all standard shop equipment safely and effectively
• Follows LOTO and shop safety procedures
• Regular lifting of objects 50 lbs or more

Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Vocational or technical training valued
• Technical Skills:
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings (experience level dependent)
  • Experience using common hand and power tools
  • Mechanical assembly or manufacturing experience preferred
  • Experience with pneumatic systems is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

• Travel: Willingness to travel approximately 20% (roughly 10 weeks per year, in waves), including domestic and international destinations such as Mexico. Valid passport required (or willingness to obtain). Valid driver’s license required.
• Tools: Builders are expected to use their own tools and box; hand tools, specialty and shop equipment provided by Axis.

Further Qualifications for Level 2-3

• Level 2: 1–3 years building custom industrial equipment, machines, or comparable mechanical assembly experience.
• Level 3: 3–5 years building custom industrial equipment or machines, with exposure to multiple project life cycles.

Wage Range:

• Level 1: $18 - $23/hour
• Level 2: $22 - $26/hour
• Level 3: $25 - $30/hour
