General Summary:

Under the direction of the Office Manager, the Medical Assistant performs administrative and clinical duties to care for patients in an ambulatory setting. Administrative duties include maintaining medical records, handling patient calls, and completing forms. Clinical duties include measuring and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and administering medications as directed by physicians or advanced practice providers. The Medical Assistant plays an integral role in the care team model.

Medical Assistant Requirements:
  • High school diploma (or GED) required
  • Current Certification as Medical Assistant required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Previous experience as Medical Assistant preferred
Patient Care Technician - UMHP:
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required
  • Must meet one of the following:
  • Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification or
  • Current enrollment (and continued progression) in a health science program with completion of nursing fundamentals course and/or one clinical rotation preferred. Equivalent enrollment considered includes Nursing School, Pre-PA School, Medical School, or related health science programs, or
  • Equivalent experience such as Medical Assistant, Paramedic, Medical First Responder, EMT, Nurse Tech, Resident Aid/Assistant, or LPN.

Additional preferred knowledge includes Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality. Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification is required. Experience in medical practice settings is preferred.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure all relevant reports, test results, labs, and correspondence are available prior to patient appointments.
  2. Escort patients to exam rooms, interview patients, measure vital signs, and document all information in the medical record.
  3. Review patient records to determine needed services and referral status.
  4. Assist physicians or advanced practice providers during examinations or procedures.
  5. Provide patients with information and instructions as authorized.
  6. Maintain exam rooms with medical supplies, instruments, and sterilization processes.
  7. Offer clerical support, including form completion, phone answering, and record handling.
  8. Clean rooms according to infection control standards.
  9. Administer medications and immunizations under supervision.
  10. Process messages from patients and staff to physicians and providers.
  11. Handle medication refills according to protocols.
  12. Maintain logs and checks for medications, equipment, and supplies.
  13. Perform EKGs and simple laboratory and screening tests.
  14. Collect and process blood and other specimens.
  15. Participate in process improvement activities.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned, including ongoing education and committee participation.
