Summary

The Medical Assistant/X‑ray Technician (MA/X‑ray Tech) works as part of a primary care team and is responsible for coordination and provision of panel management services to patients within the practice. The role includes administrative work and clinical patient care, assisting with examination and treatment under physician direction. Core duties include scheduling preventative and maintenance care, educating patients, and enhancing communication and continuity of care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Interview patients and measure vital signs (pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height, O₂ saturation).
  2. Verify and obtain patient information and medical history.
  3. Prepare patients for examination and prepare examination rooms.
  4. Administer injectable and oral medications.
  5. Administer injectable and oral immunizations to infants and adults, including Mantoux test.
  6. Perform routine in‑office lab duties (Hct, urinalysis dipstick, pregnancy test, strep antigen screen, Hgb A1c, blood glucose, blood lead, and other CLIA‑waived laboratory tests).
  7. Operate medical equipment (EKG, vitals machine, audiometry, nebulizer treatment, tympanometry, and other diagnostic equipment).
  8. Perform office procedures (Snellen, ear lavage, minor wound dressing, casting, splinting and assist with minor procedures).
  9. Assist with referrals; make referrals, call medical facilities or departments to schedule patients and request reports.
  10. Ensure assigned exam rooms are cleaned and restocked with medical supplies; perform monthly expirations.
  11. Report any clinical issues, supply requests, equipment problems or defective equipment to Supervisor.
  12. Review and prepare daily huddle for providers using software programs such as EHR and i²i.
  13. Ensure patient records are accurate and complete; ensure encounter forms are completed properly.
  14. Ensure all clinical team duties/tasks are completed appropriately, satisfactorily and in a timely manner.
  15. Run reports from computerized registries and software programs such as EHR and i²i as needed by department.
  16. Prepare appropriate forms for the patient’s medical treatment based on physician findings.
  17. Provide counseling, care and follow‑up instructions, health education and materials to patients under direct supervision.
  18. Perform general office duties (answer telephones, take messages, schedule appointments).
  19. Other duties may be assigned.
  20. May rotate within Primary Care Teams.
  21. May rotate or be assigned to other locations in case of sick leave or vacation.
  22. Assume responsibility for own personal and professional growth.
  23. Maintain a safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, safety and infection control standards.
  24. Position may be re‑assigned during activation of EOP.
X‑Ray Technician Duties
  1. Takes prescribed X‑rays (chest and extremity studies); maintains responsibility for service calls for X‑ray equipment and maintains X‑ray files.
  2. Practices radiation protection techniques to minimize radiation to patients and staff.
  3. Performs all quality control procedures as outlined in departmental procedure manuals.
  4. Maintains a checkout file log and tracking records.
  5. Consistently adheres to established safety policies and practices.
  6. Compares requisition orders with written orders to ensure proper exam is performed.
  7. Completes documentation accurately in EPIC.
  8. Performs X‑ray examinations ordered by provider (spine and extremity examinations). Confirms correct examination ordered.
  9. Prepares necessary paperwork (female pregnancy questionnaire, pregnancy waiver form).
  10. Clean and stock the X‑ray suite (disinfect X‑ray plate, table, bucky, sponges, tube; stock gowns, chux, shorts).
  11. Maintain X‑ray files and reports (enter radiologist readings, process examinations to digital copies, contact radiologist for STAT reads, purge hard‑copy X‑ray films per retention policy).
  12. Maintain X‑ray logs (daily cleaning log, record every examination performed with checklist of readings received by radiologist).
  13. Troubleshoot X‑ray issues; remain in contact with IT department for network problems and with manufacturer for equipment problems.

Education and/or Experience
  • Graduate of a vocational or technical college in medical assisting and X‑ray technician.
  • Entry level – 1 year preferred (experience in pediatrics or other specialty practices preferred).
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and patient confidentiality protocols.
  • Knowledge of medical and X‑ray terminology.
  • Knowledge of radiology safe practices.
  • Skilled in all medical assisting competencies (immunizations, vitals, taking labs, etc.).
  • Skilled in X‑ray technician competencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with other team members to coordinate patient care.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage important information requests.
  • Productivity software: Microsoft Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint.
  • Electronic health records software (NextGen preferred).
  • Utilization of Paycom, Relias Learning and PolicyTech systems.
Certificates, Licenses, Memberships and Regulations
  • Medical assistant certification.
  • Limited or full scope X‑ray license in California.
  • CPT preferred.
  • Current AED CPR certification or attainment within 6 months of hire.
  • Must successfully pass a pre‑employment physical exam, tuberculin skin test or X‑ray and urine drug screen test.
  • Health must be adequate to perform all duties.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
Work Environment

Indoor clinical setting.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Frequently required to sit. Must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds. Requires close and peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
