Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking an experienced IT/DevOps engineer to support Lunar network, IT, and communications infrastructure for lunar landers. You will work on hardware-in-the-loop integration and mission operations, ensuring prompt and effective technology support for internal customers building, launching, and operating lunar vehicles.

The role requires hands-on IT expertise, leadership, and a passion for safe, repeatable spaceflight.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor-level degree or equivalent practical experience in information systems or computer science.
  • 6+ years of professional IT experience.
  • Experience in Linux and Windows server/desktop environments.
  • Proficient with standard network protocols (DHCP, DNS, NPS, SQL, SMTP, NFS).
  • Experience writing technical documentation and procedures.
  • Experience managing Active Directory and automation.
  • Hardware troubleshooting and server/workstation deployment skills.
  • Experience with web servers and basic HTML/JS/SQL knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, deploy, and maintain IT hardware including workstations, servers, switches, and printers.
  • Lead design and implementation of a configuration management solution.
  • Improve automation and deployment frequency; reduce manual interventions.
  • Support IT infrastructure reliability, security, monitoring, backup, and performance.
  • Lead improvements across the technology spectrum and mission systems.
  • Provide on-site and time-sensitive support in a mission-critical environment.
  • Create deployment baselines aligned with STIGs; update ICDs.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As a part of a small, cross-functional team responsible for Lunar network, IT, and communications infrastructure, you'll be instrumental in supporting hardware-in-the-loop integration and mission operations for Blue Origin's lunar landers. This is a hands-on position focused on supporting critical IT equipment and ensuring our internal customers receive the prompt and effective technology support necessary for building, launching, and operating lunar landers.

Job Duties:
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain IT hardware, including workstations, servers, hypervisors, switches, and printer.
  • Lead the design and implementation of a configuration management solution.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance automation, improve deployment frequency, and reduce manual interventions.
  • Support all aspects of information technology, including availability, reliability, performance, monitoring, backup, and security related functions for a variety of infrastructure solutions.
  • Drive and lead improvements across the technology spectrum.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain mission support systems, including video and voice communications.
  • Adaptively build highly robust, fault tolerant on-prem infrastructure to support unique customer requirements for data systems control and monitoring.
  • Provide support in a mission critical environment, including troubleshooting and diagnosing end-user issues in highly visible, time sensitive situations.
  • Create new software and hardware deployment baselines built in accordance with established STIGs.
  • Generate and update engineering drawings of system deployments and ICDs (Interface Control Documents).
  • Inventory management of ground infrastructure, including maintaining internal asset tracking tools, spares procurement, physical restocking, and deployment.
  • Conduct regular audits of CI/CD pipelines to ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Adapt quickly to new work scope and provide secondary support to unique one-off systems such as weather monitoring, fiber optics distribution, RF distribution/control towers, PKI, and datacenter facilities management.
Required Qualifications:
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • B.S. degree in information systems or computer science, or equivalent practical experience
  • 6+ years professional experience minimum
  • Demonstrated ability working in IT in Systems Administration and DevOps engineering.
  • Experience managing Linux as well as Windows server and desktop environments
  • Practical knowledge and experience with standard network protocols (ie DHCP, DNS, NPS, SQL, SMTP, NFS, etc)
  • Experience writing technical documentation and procedures.
  • Experience managing Active Directory environments, including writing custom account creation and management automation.
  • Hardware troubleshooting experience, ability to assemble and reconfigure workstation and server hardware.
  • Prior experience managing web servers, including basic proficiency with HTML, JavaScript, and SQL.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on elevated structures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and install heavy server and communications equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience utilizing Atlassian Confluence and JIRA, from a user as well as administration perspective.
  • Strong experience in leading complex DevOps projects from inception to completion, involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Practical experience with deploying and managing application security measures, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity standards.
  • Experience with AWS cloud computing
  • Experience building standardized Windows and Linux images, as well as deployment tools and methodologies.
  • Experience with industrial controls software and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and experience with PKI, STIGS, disk encryption and firewall administration.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools such as Ansible, Netbox, Puppet, Chef, GitLab, etc.
  • Experience creating front end software interfaces to interact with databases.
  • Database administration experience.
