Montana Reclaimed Lumber in Gallatin Gateway, MT is seeking a 4-Sided Hand-Hewn Department Assistant to support the Department Supervisor with custom timber orders, inventory control, and safe yard operations. The role combines hands-on woodworking, forklift operation, and precise record keeping to ensure timely processing of orders and quality control.

This is a full-time position with a day shift, DOE compensation, and benefits including health, dental, vision, HSA, 401(k) retirement, holiday

Position Overview

• Schedule: Monday - Friday, Day Shift (No weekend shifts)

Role Summary

The 4-Sided Hand-Hewn Department Assistant works closely with the Department Supervisor to process custom timber orders, manage inventory, and maintain a safe, highly efficient work area. This role requires a combination of hands-on woodworking/yard skills, forklift operation, and keen attention to detail for tracking custom work orders.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Order Processing & Quality Control: Pull and process custom 4-sided hand-hewn timber and lumber orders according to exact work order specifications (size, quantity, quality, species, and color).
• Yard & Inventory Management: Organize and maintain the hewn department area to ensure optimal workflow, cleanliness, and safety. Assist with loading/unloading incoming inventory and outgoing orders.
• Equipment Operation: Safely operate a forklift, chainsaw, Skill saw, and other specialized yard equipment. Complete daily equipment maintenance checks.
• Tracking & Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records for active work orders, track material progression (such as milling or kiln drying), and provide final tallies to the office upon completion.
• Department Support: Step in to assist the Supervisor with daily department coordination, communication with sales/office staff as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

• Math & Measurement: Strong math and measuring skills, including the ability to accurately calculate board footage, square footage, and lineal footage.
• Attention to Detail: Ability to process orders efficiently while strictly adhering to quality control and project specifications.
• Equipment Proficiency: Comfortable operating heavy machinery and power tools (forklifts, chainsaws, skill saws). Prior certification or willingness to train is required.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform manual labor outdoors in a lumber yard environment.
• Work Ethic: Positive attitude, dependable work ethic, strong organizational skills, and the ability to follow instructions closely.
• Experience: Prior lumber yard, or heavy timber experience is preferred, but Montana Reclaimed Lumber is willing to train the right, highly motivated candidate.
