Job summary

Louisiana Special School District seeks Leap Connect teachers for middle and high school at the Louisiana School for the Deaf and the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired. Qualifications

• Holds a current Louisiana teaching certificate.

• Holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; and has documented enrollment in an approved alternative teacher prep program.

Responsibilities

• Teach academic subjects using modified methods and materials to accommodate student needs.
• Adapt the general education curriculum to meet individual student needs and learning styles.
• Provide direct instruction in Braille reading and writing, low-vision device usage, abacus skills, auditory training, speechreading, and American Sign Language (ASL).
• Teach essential life skills, including hygiene, safety, food preparations, and orientation and mobility for visually impaired students.
• Integrate assistive technology into daily instruction and teach how to use them effectively.
• Conduct specialized assessments to determine student needs and eligibility for services.
• Develop, write, and implement IEPs for each student, setting personalized goals and tracking progress.
• Prepare and administer tests and assignments in appropriate formats to monitor student performance and education progress.
• Collaborate with parents, general education teachers, counselors, administrators, and specialists to coordinate programs and services.

This is an Unclassified-Regular Position - Full time 9-month position.

This position is located at the LA School for the Deaf.

The Louisiana Special School District is an educational service agency that includes the Louisiana Special Schools (Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired) and Special School Programs.

Middle School and High School teachers at the Louisiana Special Schools are specialized educators responsible for adapting the core curriculum providing direct instruction in unique skill areas (e.g., Braille, American Sign) and collaborating with a support team to ensure students achieve academic success and maximum independence.

This position is applicable to all middle and high school teachers at the Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction and Curriculum Development:

• Teach academic subjects (e.g., math, science, social studies, English language) using modified methods and materials to accommodate student needs.
• Adapt the general education curriculum to meet individual student needs and learning styles.
• Provide direct instruction in specialized areas, such as Braille reading and writing, low-vision device usage, abacus skills, auditory training, speechreading, and American Sign Language (ASL).
• Teach essential life skills, including hygiene, safety, food preparations, and orientation and mobility (O&M) for visually impaired students, to promote self-sufficiency.
• Integrate assistive technology, such as screen readers, hearing aids, cochlear implants, tactile maps, and augmentative communication devices, into daily instruction and teach how to use them effectively.

Assessment and Evaluation:

• Conduct specialized assessments (e.g., functional vision assessments, learning media assessments) to determine student needs and eligibility for services.
• Develop, write, and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student, setting personalized goals and tracking progress.
• Prepare and administer tests and assignments in appropriate formats (e.g., oral, large print, Braille) to monitor student performance and education progress.

Collaboration and Support:

• Collaborate regularly with parents, general education teachers, counselors, administrators, and specialists to coordinate programs and services for students.
• Communicate with families to provide guidance, update them on progress, and tech strategies for dealing with students’ impairments.
• In-service or train other school staff and parents on appropriate strategies and procedures for interacting with students to foster maximum independence.
• Advocate for students’ needs and help them develop self-advocacy skills.

Classroom Management and Environment:

• Organize the classroom space, materials, and equipment to ensure a sage and positive learning environment.
• Establish and enforce clear rules and policies for student behavior.
• Make necessary environmental accommodations, such as adjusting lighting, rearranging furniture, to maximize student access to information and facilitate movement.
