Job summary

FORTNA partners with the world’s leading brands to transform omnichannel and parcel distribution operations. The Controls Engineer will commission controls for conveyor and sortation systems, working with customer systems to implement site-based controls.

Role involves writing machine code, PLC and HMI programming, and collaboration with Fortna employees, customers, and vendors. Travel up to 40–50% is required and a relevant Electrical Engineering degree is expected.

Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of experience in industrial controls environment.
  • Experience with PLC and HMI programming and electrical design.

Controls Engineer

Fortna partners with the world’s leading brands to transform omnichannel and parcel distribution operations. The Controls Engineer will be responsible for commissioning controls for conveyor and sortation systems, working with new and existing customer systems to implement site‑based controls.

Essential Functions
  • Write and implement machine code, integrate subsystems, and assist in all on‑site commissioning efforts.
  • Utilize Human Machine Interface (HMI) platforms such as Wonderware, RSView, Factory Talk View, and Ignition.
  • Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications under the supervision of Senior Level Controls Engineers.
  • Collaborate with FORTNA employees, customer representatives, and third‑party vendors to ensure all project aspects are considered during design and commissioning phases.
  • Review electrical designs and provide accurate as‑built drawings for approval.
  • Commission complex automated systems, provide site engineering support, and complete system acceptance testing.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 2–4 years of experience in an industrial controls environment, including PLC programming (Rockwell Software preferred, Siemens a plus) and HMI programming (Factory Talk View preferred, Ignition a plus).
  • Experience with input and output device design and implementation.
  • Proficiency in industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profinet, etc.).
  • Low‑voltage electrical design and drawing creation.
  • Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) preferred; networked VFDs a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 Office applications.
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered as a substitute for formal education.
Skills & Abilities
  • Self‑motivated, self‑aware, detail‑oriented, and results‑focused.
  • Understanding of VFDs, induction motors, programmable logic controllers, and industrial networks.
  • Ability to manage and execute basic system implementations, enhancements, and retrofits.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with FORTNA team members, project managers, and customers.
  • Competence in producing quality designs, drawings, programs, and documentation with minimal errors.
  • Ability to take direction from Senior Level Controls Engineers to ensure project goals are achieved.
Work Environment

This role combines professional office duties with site‑based work. It involves standard office equipment and travel to industrial sites where appropriate PPE, electrical diagnostic tools, networking equipment, and laptops are used.

Travel

Up to 40–50% travel to various sites is required.

Salary Range

$76,100 – $114,200 (base salary)
