Job Duties

Western State Hospital (WSH) is currently hiring for part time LPNs on 1st and 2nd shift. Successful candidates must be available to work 4, 8, or 12-hour shifts on weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or 7 a.m-3:00 pm, or 3:00 pm-11:00 pm. Part-time LPNs are required to work a minimum of 64 hours per month. Additionally, they must work 4 hours on either Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, as well as 4 hours on another holiday, such as the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, or New Year’s Day.

LPN will provide direct patient care in a safe, therapeutic environment for a specific patient population in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital that conforms to care and treatment policies and procedures and demonstrates knowledge of population specific needs and competencies.

  • Providing quality care as a part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Provide work direction to PNA staff, under supervision of an RN
  • Maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
  • Creating healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
  • Observing and reporting feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional wellbeing, and other situations
  • Documenting and communicating
  • Using specialized training for promoting mental wellness recovery
  • Prioritizes time to meet patient’s needs and provides direct patient care duties as assigned and when finished with medication administration.
  • Implements all individual treatment plans as written.
  • Administer medications, does treatments, and reports and documents patient education and response according to policy and procedure
Paid Shift Differential

2nd shift weekdays $3.50/hr., and weekend/holidays $3.50/hr.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a Current LPN license that is eligible to be utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Knowledge of illness and treatment modalities to include medication administration.
  • Ability to implement nursing care plan and provide guidance to other staff.
  • Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff. Effective communication (written, verbal and sign).
  • Ability to participate in interdisciplinary team. Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
  • Ability to work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24-hour 7 day per week psychiatric hospital which at times may mean working a 16-hour shift if and when necessary.
  • Complete all annual competency training to include TOVA III with physical restraints.
  • Complete and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association
  • Demonstrates knowledge of recovery/trauma informed care.
Additional Considerations
  • Psych Nursing experience preferred.
  • Veteran or Spouse of Veteran.
  • Bilingual in Spanish
