Job summary

Orting School District seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide direct health care for students with chronic conditions, injuries or illnesses, under the direction of a licensed professional. The nurse implements Individual Health Plans, administers medications, and collaborates with families and staff to ensure compliance with state laws and district policies.

The position requires Washington LPN licensure, CPR/First Aid certifications, and may involve bus duty and health screenings.

Job description

Purpose

Implements health care plans and provides appropriate care and support for students with chronic conditions, who are ill, medically fragile or injured under direction of assigned administrator(s) and licensed health care professional(s). Implements teacher's lesson plan in working with individuals and small groups of students. This position is distinguished from the Health Technician by the scope and breadth of medical care provided and the requirement for a valid State of Washington Practical Nurse License.

Requirements

Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent; and

  • Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment;
  • Hold an associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
  • Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university;
  • Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implements health care plans
  • Provides direct care for students with chronic health issues and/or accommodation requirements, i.e., diabetes, asthma, in accordance with Individual Health Plan and provider orders
  • Provides one-on-one care for assigned students, i.e., tube feeding, deep suctioning, medication administration, catheterizations, in accordance with Individual Health Plan and provider orders
  • Occasionally, may be required to ride the school bus with the student(s) to and from school.
  • Collaborates with health care providers, parents, students, staff and outside agencies regarding health care plans, treatment and compliance with legal requirements, etc.
  • Monitors students in a variety of settings such as school, buses, field trips in order to provide appropriate care,
  • Implements teacher's lesson plan in working with individuals and small groups of students.
  • Implements behavior management strategies using the same emphasis and techniques as used by the teacher, may include physical restraint of students.
  • Administers tests under teacher supervision following training; assists with monitoring and scoring the tests.
  • Refers students, as appropriate, for further medical/dental treatment
  • Reports incidents, accidents and injuries, i.e., suspected contagious diseases, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc., in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies
  • Assists with review and maintenance of student health records
  • Assists with various health screenings, i.e., hearing, vision, height/weight, etc.
  • Assists with management of health room
  • Performs duties using computers, assigned software and other equipment
  • Models appropriate behavior for students
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, parents and students
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality
  • Complies with applicable District, State and Federal rules, policies and practices
  • May serve on multi-disciplinary and care teams
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Completion of education required for LPN licensure in State of Washington

Experience: None, experience in a school setting preferred

Substitutions: Any combination of experience and/or training which provides the applicant with requisite knowledge, skills and ability to perform the work and that meets applicable federal and state requirements.

Required Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid State of Washington Practical Nurse License (LPN), CPR and First Aid Certification. May be required to complete student safety training. May be required to complete student safety training. May be required to have a valid State of Washington Driver's License.

Condition Of Employment

Criminal background clearance

Completion of required SafeSchools Trainings

Reporting Relationship

Assigned administrator. Job performance is evaluated by assigned administrator with input from school principal, certificated teacher, and/or licensed health care provider.

Terms of Employment

Work Year 180 days per year (plus paid holidays that fall within the work year calendar)

Hours 7.5 hours paid per day plus half-hour unpaid duty-free lunch. This position includes riding the bus in the AM/PM with assigned student.

Schedule 8:25 am 4:25 pm (start and end times may be adjusted once the bus route is confirmed)

Salary 2026-27 PSE Salary Schedule A ($34.31 36.98 DOE)

Work Environment

Job duties involve sitting, standing, bending, stooping, walking and lifting students. Exposed to body fluids and infectious disease. May be exposed to high noise levels. May be required to deal with distraught and potentially violent students. Work is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Mental Demands

Experiences frequent interruptions; required to meet inflexible deadlines; requires concentration to details; flexible work schedule may be required; may deal with distraught or difficult individuals.
