Responsibilities

• Direct the day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants.
• Ensure nursing personnel comply with facility policies.
• Review department policies and revise as needed.
• Plan shifts’ services, programs, and activities with staff.
• Keep Nursing Service Procedures Manual current.
• Ensure adherence to Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
• Prepare reports and recommendations on shift activities.
• Coordinate with resident services to maintain total care.
• Ensure staff are aligned with job descriptions.
• Participate in quality assurance program.
• Participate in facility surveys by government agencies.
• Update resident discharge plans as required.
• Assist in planning the nursing portion of discharge plans.
• Explain policies to staff, residents, and agencies.
• Admit, transfer, discharge residents as required.
• Complete incident reports.
• Manage daily census and business office submissions.
• Perform admin duties like forms, reports.
• Protect patient information and report violations.
• Report unauthorized access attempts.
• Complete and file admission, transfer, discharge records.
• Encourage physicians to review plans and sign orders.
• Receive telephone orders from physicians.
• Transcribe physician orders to resident charts and care plans.
• Chart nurses' notes accurately.
• Submit accident/incident reports.
• Record diet orders and forward to Food Services.
• Report discrepancies to Nurse Supervisor.
• Fill transfer forms.
• Document unauthorized discharges.
• Perform routine charting per policies.
• Sign and date entries in medical record.
• Prepare and administer medications as ordered.
• Verify patient identity before administration.
• Ensure medication is not given to wrong resident.
• Maintain stock and report needs.
• Order meds and supplies as needed.
• Keep narcotic records accurate.
• Notify Nurse Supervisor of discrepancies.
• Review medication cards for accuracy.
• Notify attending physician of automatic stop orders.
• Dispose of drugs per procedures.
• Participate in performance evaluations.
• Inform Nurse Supervisor of staffing needs.
• Report absenteeism.
• Review department workforce.
• Develop work assignments.
• Provide leadership to nursing staff.
• Make rounds to ensure tasks are performed.
• Ensure aides are trained.
• Meet with shift staff.
