Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – School Health Nurse


Location: Smithfield, NC 27577


Schedule: Full-time, school-based


Employment Type: Contract


Pay Rate: Starting at $40/hour


Position Overview

Birch Agency is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support students in a school-based setting in Smithfield, North Carolina.


This opportunity is ideal for Pediatric LPNs, clinic LPNs, or Long-Term Care LPNs who are interested in transitioning to a school environment and enjoying a more predictable schedule, school holidays, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students' health and well-being.


The School LPN will work under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) to provide health services, implement individualized healthcare plans, support students with complex medical needs, and assist with training and supervising unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs).


Key Responsibilities


  • Implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and health-related accommodations outlined in 504 Plans and IEPs under the direction of the RN.

  • Provide nursing care and support to students with a variety of medical and health needs.

  • Perform ordered medical procedures in accordance with established policies, procedures, and physician orders.

  • Monitor students' responses to treatments and procedures and report changes or concerns to the RN.

  • Manage health room visits for illness and injury using established clinical guidelines and protocols.

  • Assess student health concerns and determine when issues require referral or follow-up by the School Nurse or other healthcare professionals.

  • Administer medications in accordance with physician orders, district policies, and nursing protocols.

  • Assist with monitoring students with chronic health conditions and provide appropriate interventions.

  • Assign, train, and supervise UAPs performing designated special health procedures.

  • Provide guidance and support to UAPs to ensure health-related tasks are performed safely and according to established protocols.

  • Assist the School Nurse with training general education teachers and school staff on medical protocols, including EpiPen administration, seizure action plans, diabetic monitoring, and other student-specific health procedures.

  • Maintain accurate student health records and documentation.

  • Communicate with families, school staff, healthcare providers, and the supervising RN regarding student health needs.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable school, state, and federal regulations.


Qualifications


  • Active North Carolina LPN license required.

  • Previous pediatric, school-based, clinic, or long-term care experience is a plus.

  • Experience working with children or individuals with complex medical needs is a plus.

  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to follow healthcare protocols and accurately document student care.

  • Comfortable working collaboratively under the direction of an RN.

  • Ability to train, delegate to, and supervise UAPs as appropriate.

  • Compassionate and patient approach when working with students and families.
