Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide patient care in the Neuro unit, following nursing processes and hospital standards. The role emphasizes patient advocacy, accurate documentation, and responsive care delivery in a high‑acuity setting.

Responsibilities include data collection, care planning, patient and family education, and collaboration with the nursing team to ensure quality outcomes. Certification requirements may include BLS, ACLS, or PALS depending on unit.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing Program or equivalent required.
  • Currently licensed or licensed by endorsement as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
  • BLS certification is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
  • ACLS and/or PALS may be required depending on unit/department.

Shifts: full-time PM, Part Time PM , Weekend PM

Schedules: 7 p.m.-7 a.m.

Job Highlights

The Neurosurgery Acute Care Unit (NACU) is a 25-bed acute care unit that provides care for general neurology and post-surgical neurosurgery patients. Our NACU team also provides specialized care for patients with neurological disorders, including epilepsy, myasthenia gravis (MG), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), encephalopathy, and multiple sclerosis (MS), as well as patients recovering from strokes and brain or spinal surgeries. UAB Neurology and Neurosurgery is consistently ranked among the top 50 programs of its kind nationally by U.S. News & World Report, which also has ranked UAB’s program as No. 1 in Alabama. UAB is also Alabama’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center, so as soon as patients arrive, we are prepared to deliver the latest stroke treatment. Additionally, UAB has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery, demonstrating UAB Hospital’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state‑of‑the‑art standards. UAB Medicine is also home to Alabama’s only Level IV Epilepsy Center, the highest designation available from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.

Job Description

General Responsibilities Under general supervision, to provide nursing care to patients based on the nursing process, UAB Hospital Standards of Nursing Care, and UAB Hospital policies and procedures while ensuring quality of care. To orient patients and family members to surrounding environment, acting as a patient advocate. To collect patient assessment data and notify RN of potential problems. To evaluate patient’s response to care and report findings to RN, document delivery of patient care, effectively respond to emergency situations, demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, meet patient’s educational needs, and serve as a role model to other members of the patient care team.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists with patient care by executing and administering treatments and procedures directed by supervisor.
  • Reports to supervisor and other staff any patient issues or concerns.
  • Maintains accurate patient records; e.g., charts, schedules, procedures, medication/treatment history, etc.
  • Educates patients and family members in accordance with the established plan of care.
  • Demonstrates core standards of exceptional customer service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing Program or equivalent required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently licensed or licensed by endorsement as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
