Job summary

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse for the Preston Veterans Home. The LPN will deliver person-centered nursing care, administer medications, and perform procedures within scope of practice in a long-term care setting.

Shifts include Day 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Evening 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m., and Night 10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m., with weekends varying. State benefits apply; DHS background checks may be conducted for finalists.

Qualifications

  • Licensed in Minnesota as a Practical Nurse with no restrictions and in good standing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification through AHA or Red Cross or ability to be certified by date of hire.
  • Computer skills to complete electronic charting, specifically PointClickCare.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, and keep clear and accurate notes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide person-centered nursing care for residents in a long-term care environment.
  • Administer medications and treatments to residents as ordered by a practitioner and under RN direction.

As an LPN for the Minnesota Veterans Home (MVH)-Preston, you will provide person-centered nursing care for residents in a long-term care environment by delivering care and skilled procedures within the LPN scope of practice, as defined in the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act and in accordance with current federal, state and Veterans Administration regulations. An LPN administers medications and treatments to residents as ordered by a practitioner and under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

An intermittent employee works an irregular and uncertain schedule, based on the needs of the home. Intermittent employees must be available to work all shifts and some weekends. Shifts are: Day shift 6:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Evening shift 2:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m., and Night shift 10:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m. Current State of Minnesota employees will not be considered for concurrent appointments at this time due to overtime considerations and the irregular work schedule requirements of this position. This position is not initially eligible for health and dental insurance benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed in Minnesota as a Practical Nurse with no restrictions and in good standing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross or ability to be certified by date of hire.
  • Computer skills sufficient to complete electronic charting, specifically in PointClickCare.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, and keep clear and accurate notes and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a skilled nursing facility, long-term care, or other senior healthcare environment.
  • Experience working with Veterans.
  • Effective interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships.
Additional Requirements
  • A Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check may be conducted on the top finalist(s) for the position. When conducted, a finalist must pass the DHS background check.
  • A Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening (or chest x-ray) is required prior to employment.
  • Employment reference checks will be conducted on finalists. This may include a review of documentation related to job performance and contact with the applicant's former employer(s).
