Job summary

Western State Hospital, part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, is seeking Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) for 1st shift with a set 12-hour schedule. The role offers a $3,000 sign-on bonus for new DBHDS hires and involves 36–48 hours biweekly on a 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.

schedule in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital. Applicants must hold a Virginia LPN license; BLS certification is required; overtime may be necessary.

Qualifications

• Current LPN license eligible for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Knowledge of illness and treatment modalities including medication administration.
• Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff; effective communication.
• Ability to work overtime in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital.
• Complete annual competency training including TOVA III with restraints.
• Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Demonstrates knowledge of recovery/trauma-informed care.
• Additional considerations: bilingual in Spanish may be preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide work direction to PNA staff under RN supervision.
• Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.
• Foster healthy interpersonal interactions across units.
• Observe, document, and report on patient treatments and wellbeing.
• Administer medications and treatments with continuity of care.
• Promote health education and monitor equipment function.
• Perform skilled nursing care for patients with complex conditions.
• Monitor vital signs in the EHR.
• Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
• Provide one-on-one direct observations.
• Apply de-escalation techniques to manage behavior.
