Job description

New York, NY

The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on 62nd Street in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 450 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Browning is looking for a Lower School Associate Teacher for the 2025-2026 academic year. Associate Teachers support teaching and learning in Grades K-2 classrooms. This role will most likely be in a kindergarten classroom for the 2025-2026 school year. The position is expected to begin orientation on August 20, 2025. The annual salary for this position is $59,000. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

Associate teachers are responsible for building strong relationships with students and head teachers in order to deliver the content and curriculum of the Browning program. Successful associate teachers believe in and desire the growth of all their students and have a passion for the art, craft, and science of pedagogy. Ultimately, teachers are responsible for the most important work of our School -- knowing our boys and teaching them well. Among other things, a Lower School Associate Teacher is tasked with:

  1. Partnering with head teacher(s) in delivering instruction in English language arts, mathematics, and social studies
  2. Shepherding both the social-emotional and academic growth of the boys in your care
  3. Helping to cultivate a classroom environment that is warm and welcoming, while holding students to high expectations for excellence
  4. Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
  5. Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the faculty and your teaching team
  6. Participating in professional development to grow self, division, and school
  7. Assisting with communication with families about curricular and student matters as needed
  8. Heartily contributing to the school community
  9. Performing non-classroom duties as needed such as early arrival, bus dismissal, lunch duty, recess supervision, and providing substitute coverage when a head teacher is absent

Key Competencies and Qualifications

In general, successful members of the Browning faculty are:

  • Champions of boys -- They believe in and love the expansive potential in boys.
  • Relationship-oriented -- They actively build meaningful relationships with students and families.
  • Purpose-driven -- They are inquiry-minded, curious and resourceful in finding solutions and growth opportunities.
  • Justice-seeking -- They seek to address students and their needs with an equity-oriented and antiracist lens and engage in the deep work of equity in the classroom and school community.
  • Can-do collaborators -- They seek collaboration and listen deeply to others, and they believe that a can-do attitude allows a team to accomplish more.

A successful Lower School Associate Teacher will possess most or all of the following:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in elementary education or a related field
  • Knowledge and appreciation of working with boys (preferred)
  • Strong classroom management skills in creating a warm and productive learning environment for all students
