Job summary

Jim Smith Contracting is seeking a reliable Heavy Equipment Transport Driver to join our Grand Rivers, KY team for a seasonal role. You will operate a commercial truck and lowboy trailer to move heavy machinery across highways, secure loads per DOT standards, and coordinate with dispatchers for delivery timing.

This position requires a Class A CDL, at least 2 years of lowboy experience, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • At least 2 years of experience specifically dedicated to hauling heavy equipment on lowboy trailers in a construction environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to confidently operate and load/unload heavy machinery (trackhoes, loaders, rollers, etc.)
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, climb on/off trailers, and lift, pull or carry heavy chains and binders (up to 70lbs).
  • Deep knowledge of FMCSA regulations, load-securement calculations, and safety protocols for active construction zones.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Loading and securing loads onto lowboy trailers per DOT rules.
  • Plan routes and obtain oversize/overweight permits.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and logging.
  • Adhere to DOT Hours of Service regulations.
  • Coordinate with dispatchers and site personnel for delivery timing.
  • Follow transportation regulations and company policies.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues or safety hazards.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear.

Job description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Equipment Transport: Safely operate a commercial truck and lowboy trailer to move heavy machinery across highway construction zones, local roads, and interstate systems.
  • Loading & Securing: Safely drive/operate various types of heavy construction equipment onto the lowboy trailer. Properly chain, bind, and secure all loads according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety standards.
  • Route Planning & Permitting: Along with Asset Manager make sue oversize/overweight permits are obtained, plan transport routes to avoid low clearances or restricted bridges, and coordinate escort vehicles when required.
  • Pre/Post-Trip Inspections: Conduct rigorous daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections (brakes, tires, lights, straps, chains, etc.) and accurately log reports.
  • Compliance & Logging: Adhere strictly to DOT Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
  • Site Coordination: Communicate effectively with dispatchers, project managers, and job site superintendents to coordinate delivery timing and drop-off locations.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal transportation regulations and company policies while driving.
  • Identify and report any mechanical issues or safety hazards concerning the vehicle.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including wearing appropriate safety gear.

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while driving.
  • Climb in and out of truck

Drivers are responsible for the safe, proper and efficient completion of assigned duties and operation of the dump truck within company policy and DOT regulations. Travel is regional and drivers report to our Grand Rivers, KY facility each working day. Positions are seasonal, meaning our drivers work normally from April through mid-December. In order to qualify, applicants must have a Class A CDL, must have Lowboy experience and must be able to drive manual shift trucks and have a good Motor Vehicle Report.
